Hi Paul,
I fully understand your situation with the Association and I am responding to you, not to insist on Jitsi, but to clear up a doubt that I believe remains.
Jitsi, like WhatsApp, has client programs, such as those we have on our Android or iPhone devices, but they need a server program to work, it is not a dedicated server.
In Jitsi, the website itself provides the possibility of connecting clients through the website’s server, but Jitsi also distributes a program that acts as a server and can be installed on a PC.
I am writing only to clarify that the Jitsi server is a program and not a physical server. I’m sorry, but I can’t explain it any better than that.
Note: What I’m about to say is an aberration, but I’ll try to give an example that isn’t correct. You’ve probably used AnyDesk for remote access to another PC. The AnyDesk on the PC that provides access is the “server” (again, what I’m saying is an aberration), and the PC that has remote access to the other PC is a client.
Jitsi has a program that acts as a server for PCs, Android, or iPhone clients that want to connect to make a call.
In case of conflicts with third parties, WhatsApp, Telegram, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, whatever they choose, don’t even bother.
Thanks for the further clarification as to what a server is.
Perhaps will try it to see how it works for my own éducation, thanks.
But convincing a french resident to use something in another language to install is a loosing battle.
Our village is complex to explain from a management aspect to anyone outside, (I dont always understand it) we have a Syndic which we pay to manage our property. They are commercial business so pay for and use teams from microsoft. Hence when they have meetings they use teams. But our part is a volunteer part with no money so want something for nothing hence whatsapp. But when we try to join the 2 groups together the difficultés arrive, hence they said use google meet, but that limits to 1 hour free. Where whatsapp has no limits for home use not business. They will not let us use teams on their licence. Politics and bloody French !
Maybe I can help explain.
It seems Jitsi runs a daemon , (just like the sshd daemon for ssh services). You can run the daemon by enabling it in any or all computers that require the service.
It that what you mean @Tech_JA ?
You can use our freely available instance at meet.jit.si or self-host it yourself using our readily available Debian packages or comprehensive Docker setup.
Several articles explain how to get it on PC (did not read on down to see about Android):
“Microsoft has dropped the Teams apps for Linux in favor of the Progressive Web App (WPA) version of the service, which can also install on your computer for a more traditional experience. “
But I did find this website (which I have not encountered before) with an article:
Thanks for the link Sheila, which I followed, but it is just a sales pitch, nothing behind it. Just talk after dropping skype. I tried on one computer using the web interface and It said my browser (chromium) was not compatible with the interface. Going to try a version of Google Chrome late today, or the windows app and see if it will run on. WINE.
Feeling I may just abandon the virtual meeting as a protest and only go to real meetings where I see other members, not sure I want to invite everyone into my home. Shame as the first item on the agenda effects me and the work I am doing right now.
Works fine everytime. Except when the president decided that he must use windows and the online browser version, then everything is echoed so you hear the same conversation several times and feedback occours so you just get noise. The whatsapp linux browser does not support voice or image its just text.
Ok in the lmde 7 apps store is “portal for teams” just installed it and appears to work. But cannot fully test as I don’t know anyone who uses it to call. None of my contacts are listed.
Funny things
When I started it asked for my Skype email address which died a year back. But tried to import contacts even though it was empty.
I then tried the on line portal “teams.live.com” again asked for Skype address but that appears to connect.
I will know more on Wednesday at the meeting.
It gets one chance if it fails will be in the bin.
It works fine in most browsers too… Firefox, MS Edge - et cetera…
It even works through Citrix - i.e. I fire up after logging in via Firefox (on my Ubuntu 24.04 desktop), Citrix ICA client, then in my Windows 11 “VDI” in Citrix - I fire up the Windows Teams “fat” client - and my microphone and sound are working (sorta - it’s a bit dodgy - i.e. I can hear fine, but other’s can’t hear me very well - have to make sure there’s no noise [e.g. desktop fan] and crank up the volume for the microphone… It may work better with a wired USB headset - but I was using it through BlueTooth audio from my Sennheiser headset…
I haven’t tried audio out and in on Teams in Windows 11 AVD (Azure virtual desktop).
It’s a shame they dropped the dedicated client for Teams - but it really was just a webapp - e.g. it didn’t respect my DE settings - i.e. completely ignored them…
The interface through google chrome is not the same options so I could not mute the microphones or stop the caméra. The feed back on the meeting was so bad had to abandon and use the stand alone app.
But at the end of the day prefer whatsapp, or the old skype but that is no longer and option.
