Neither of these laptops with the issue has a rizen GPU. They are both Radeon, an R2 in the Acer and R3 in the Toshiba. I wiped the drive in the Acer and installed Q4OS, and have not had a recurrence of the black screen. About 3 hours after changing the kernel version in the Toshiba, it relapsed to the black screen flashes, so have since wiped the drive there also and installed Q4OS version 6.2 Andromeda, with Trinity desktop. It’s been running that distro since yesterday without any issues, so will leave it with that setup.

By the way, I’m unable to change the refresh rate. 60Hz is the only option available.

Both my monitors are 4k, connected HDMI. Some monitors will only Ron at 60.
