Any Good Laser Printers for Linux Systems?

My Brother (3300W IIRC) suddenly died few years ago. It didn’t give any warnings, just suddenly stopped working. It was easy to use with Linux, way better than the Pantum I now use

I was thinking of that, but did not find a way to turn on the printer.
However, it may work with a networked printer, which basically turns itself on when receives a print job.

But is it eating electric in standby mode, even a few cents ?

Hi Rosika,

It says it is linux compatable, and there are drivers on the Brother site.

Looks OK to me

Wow - great price… I’m still astounded how “commodified” things like Laser printers are these days…

My first Brother Laser - purchased in the mid 1990’s was nearly $1000 (AUD) that’s the one my missus melted overhead transparencies inside - even though I warned her well before - “you need to use photocopier compatible transparencies”…

1994 Brother HL-630

That printer model (HL-L2400DW) is only $159 AUD at a local office supplies chain…

One thing you should research - before purchasing - the cost of toner cartridges - and - whether they’re “generic” across a range of Brother’s laser printers…

Just looked up the toner cartridge details :

  • It’s compatible with MFC-L2880DWXL/, MFC-L2880DW, MFC-L2820DW, MFC-L2800DW, HL-L2480DW, HL-L2460DWXL, HL-L2460DW and HL-L2400DW printers.

So that’s a bunch of different devices - that’s a good thing…

My Brother colour laser MFC uses toner carts that are also for a bunch of other Brother devices… And - they’re considerably cheaper to buy than HP ones… HP changes their internals and cartridge formats frequently - another reason I’d never get another HP.

Having used dot matrix, inkjet and laser printers in the past - and - when I did desktop support - supporting printers - I’d always recommend Laser over anything else… Less moving parts for a start - and toner overall, seems cheaper than ink, i.e. a toner cart is more expensive than an ink cart - but - overall it will print 3-4-5 (or more) times as many jobs - and usually doesn’t get clogged up…

– edit –

Wow! That toner cartridge TN2530XL is nearly as much as the actual printer! But - still reasonably priced IMHO.

Australia OfficeWorks :

  • Brother HL-L2400DW : $159.00 (AUD)
  • Brother TN2530XL Toner Cartridge Black : $150.00 (AUD)

the estimate is 3000 pages (for the toner cart)… not too shabby…

That’s still a lot better than my experience with a Samsung Colour Laser… The printer was about $500… it shipped with only 1/3 full toner carts… A full set of toner carts was over $1000…

Hi again and thanks to all for your latest replies, :waving_hand:

@ihasama :

Oh dear. That´s rather unfortunate. So sorry to hear that. But thanks a lot for letting me know.

Hmm, that makes me wonder if I should get a Brother device. :thinking:

@kovacslt :

The same with me. I have to turn on the printer manually. I could let it remain in standby, but for the very few printing jobs I have I don´t think it´s worth it.

@callpaul.eu :

Probably yes. I think so as well.

@nevj :

Thanks for providing your opinion, Neville.

But @ihasama had bad luck with his Brother printer (see above). I´m a bit torn now. :thinking:

@daniel.m.tripp :

Yes, I was actually pleased to see some (hopefully good) laser printer on offer at such a price.

Thanks for thr tip.

On https://www.amazon.de/GREENSKY-TN2510-TN2510XL-DCP-L2627DWE-MFC-L2827DWXL-1-Schwarz/dp/B0DWWC16SD/

I found the GREENSKY toner which should be compatible with the Brother pronter in question. It costs 19.99 Euros. I could get others for 23.99 Euros and more. But I might not need a new toner cartridge for a very long time (if ever :wink: ).

Thanks a lot, Dan.

Great. That´s the way to go for me as well.

Thank you for your evaluation, Dan. You helped a lot. :heart:

Thanks again to all and many greetings from Rosika :slightly_smiling_face:

Dont be torn. Brother is a good brand. I have had a Brother inkjet printer MFC640CW for about 20 years. Never had a problem, not even clogged ink. I run it on non-genuine aftermarket ink cartridges, and I have even used refilled cartridges.

I cant say the same for Canon. I had a Canon ip5000…. it had endless problems with clogged ink. I think Canon may have finer ink jets than Brother. I could drive the Canon from Linux, but control was inferior to that obtained with the Windows drivers.

Hi Neville, :waving_hand:

thanks a lot for providing your experience with your Brother printer. :heart:

Well, that sounds very much better. So I might go for a Brother printer after all.

The one that I already looked up at amazon and on the Brother store seems to meet my needs quite nicely. As for toner cartridges: I think that´s O.K. At least I hope so.

The ink cartridges I need for my present printer (HP Deskjet 3050-J611-series) aren´t so cheap either: 26.99 Euros (XL version black & colour) for 480 pages.

Thanks again and many greetings fom Rosika :slightly_smiling_face:

Good choice! Every machine dies some day but Brother was an easy to use printer. Much easier than my current one.
