Backup and restore using GParted

I wanted to expand the size of /home. So I booted my live Mint USB drive. I formatted the new area as ext4 and then copied the old home partition to the new home area. Doing this using Gparted. I said to myself, “Well that was real easy, next comes the hard part.” Since I was using the USB Mint, I was sure the HDD root would have to be updated. ie; point /home to the new area.
But surprise! When I started my PC, root was already updated (pointing) to the new partition. How? Did Gparted know I was copying home and updated root on the HDD even tho I was booted from a USB? I know I got a lot to learn about Linux, but this was a nice surprise.
