Ban on social media for under 16

had a beer with a mate today, after a stressful day of Project Managers being shit at their job (never seen one fired yet - but they’re universally shit) - he’s born in '67, and me '62, and we agreed neither of us can decide what we’re going to do when we “grow up”…

I’ve got a 50% success rate - I wanted to have a job working from home - achievement unlocked - I wanted a job creating stuff - nowhere near there yet…

But what happens when they won’t?

Cyberbullying…

I got bullied at school - at least when I got home - they weren’t there…

Cyberbullying? They’re 24x7 right there in your house…

Get this all the time - parents won’t and don’t parent…

Now I’m going to sound like a reactionary convervative boomer - would a “breeding license” hurt? Yeah - I know that senitment smacks of eugenics… but…

Some of the things I enjoy - are affected because parents won’t parent… Parents will write out a blank cheque and their kids are buying e-vehicles with 7000 watts of power capable of highway speeds and the parents are “so what?” - might as well buy them an M16… Oh shit - I forgot some American parents do that anyway… But NEVER EVER impinge on their freedom to be generational f_ck_ps…

Freedom / Schmeedom…

4 years ago - this site got flooded with “cookers” during the Covid “times” - i.e. morons who thought compulsory vaccination was against their rights - and somehow opensource was linked to their “freedom”… To me? Your rights to be a member of society are based on your ability to accept the consensus… if you don’t want to be vaccinated? Go and live in the desert but don’t infect my grandchildren with your preventable diseases…

You are saying parents should regulate internet activity of their children.
Some do. My nephew’s family are regulated… the kids phones have some access blocked.
I suppose you could say our new law is a stopgap for parents who do not regulate kids internet. If it worked for 50% of cases it would be an improvement. The current situation has to change.
The alternative is something drastic, like boarding school till 16.

I meant parents should parent. sorry. this is a Over reach of power.

Cyber bullying is an issue but can be prevented by the parents had done their jobs,. I refuse to hand over private information like that over the net

You may find yourself excluded from some sites in future if you dont give them what they ask for. Control and power.

from what i see this not be a thing. Thank God for the Granite act. the Au is over stepping

You know. Kids are vulnerable to addiction to their screens. Letting them on such devices too early risks actually harming them severely. There is no reason to let kids younger than 15 on social media.

I’ve been addicted to computer gaming since age 7 (I’m 51 now); my parents didn’t know any better at the time. I paid the price. If there was government regulation in place, such as “don’t let minors near a computer” I think my life would have looked a lot different right now.

Letting children younger than 12 near a computer constitutes abuse, in my opinion, up to age 15 unwise.

Are games now replaced with social media and contributions.

Sadly bullying is a part of life, many things are in place but its never enough, like you I was bullyed at school as I wore glasses in the time before computers. My daughter had the same problems over clothes she wore as we could not aford désigner marks. It would appear now if you are not on or participating in….

The covid thing brought this again to light, who was right or wrong, guess we may never know. Every winter I have flu and covid jabs my wife decided to stop, she only had them so we could travel as that was part of the french requirements

We get very little news feed on this country or the rules they impose. Except for images of the island holidays

I don’t really understand the question. The garden is a private area around the house within the fences. Who would prohibit our children to play there?
Maybe I used a wrong word again, and it’s not a

garden, but… ???

Exactly that’s what I meant too

I see your point. I feel the same. But something needs to be done.

That’s sadly true, and the better of it is when the bullyed kid can ask for help from the parents.
But the kid could also ashamed that he/she is a looser, can’t protect him/herself, does not have the courage to ask for help, and the worst case scenario can lead even to suicide.

How old are you?

While I do agree, as I earlier pointed out:
The privacy concerns are already there, and those lie in the so called social media itself (and its associated apps) .
I don’t use it.
You don’t have to either.
Your kid may use it (mine do as well), they are exposed to those privacy dangers.
If this age verification steps in, changes a privacy problem “A” into a problem “B”, but may solve another problem.

It may be on the “blacklist”, but this leads to politics, which is to be avoided here.

There were heavy anti-vaccination opinions, and a heavy pro-vaccination propaganda.
(We had the opportunity to choose which vaccinationt to take)
My doctor told me his own opinion, and I accepted it. He said, the best I can take is the chinesee Shinofarm vaccination, as it is produced using a mature 60 years old technology, which already prooved. So we choosed it in the family. We didn’t get sick at all during the whole epidemic story.

I consider myself similar, maybe not so modearate

So when I read the linked list about the concerns, especially item 4,6,7 on the list, concieved me, this criticized rule tries to implement the right thing.

Spain to ban social media access for under-16s

It is now law in .au
It seems to be working… lets see if the amount of bullying decreases.
I like it anyway , because it sends an appropriate message even if it is not effective.
Your link is non-free when I try to read at my location.
