Hi Xander,
I think everything has already been said, I can only add something personal.
I started using computers when there were no GUIs. If memory serves, the first one I used was MS DOS GEM. From then on, I always worked with GUIs, but also in terminals.
There are things that I do on my PC on a day-to-day basis that I can’t see myself doing without a GUI, and others that I can’t see myself doing without a terminal.
2 very simple examples:
- I can’t “live” without drag&dropping files and folders from the GUI.
- On the other hand, I can’t imagine maintaining my system, installing programs or using the simple but great grep command, which does all of the above in the terminal.
In my opinion, I shouldn’t radicalize and do everything in cli or do everything in GUI. The system has to adapt to the way we like to work and go the other way around. However, I have a lot of respect for users who only use cli.
Let me tell you a story…
Many years ago, the ATM machines in my country already had a graphical environment and I went to an EU country and, when I tried to withdraw money, the ATM layout was a simple text terminal.
I can’t tell you what a shock that was and how long it took me to withdraw money, but everything was written down, the only thing missing was the graphical environment.
