Help Installing Linux

My PC is using Windows 7 32-bit now.
Its specs:
CPU: HCL
Number of Cores: 2
2.10 GHz 2.10 GHz
64-bit capable: Yes
RAM: 1 GB
Presently Windows 7 on turning on uses 600 MB of RAM and shows no performance issues.

Can anyone please Recommend me a Linux Distro which is:-

  1. Lightweight
  2. Uses less ram
  3. Has Support for lot of softwares
  4. Desktop must be customizable
  5. Secure and Good For Privacy
  6. Stable Updates

Q4OS, Slax, AntiX. If you go for Debian-based distro like Q4OS or Slax, you will have a variety of software to choose from. I think things that work on Debian will work on those. Some people recommend AntiX for older computer but I don’t know whether it is good or not.

Hi there,

I would propose:

  1. MX Linux XFCE Desktop

https://mxlinux.org/download-links/

  1. Linux Mint XFCE Edition

You can also have a look on Distrowatch to find the right Linux Distribution for you:

Hope that helps.

I would prefer number 2.

Q4OS has two desktops - Trinity and Plasma. Trinity is lightweight as far as I heard.
But In Trinity Desktop, If a bug is to be fixed, It takes around 5-6 months (As far as I heard). It is a very long time.

Slax is Live CD/USB OS. But I don’t need Live OS and I change my USB daily.

They will be Resource Heavy for 1 GB Ram. Can’t be used.

Puppy linux would work also on that machine. But you may want something more If you could up the Ram to say 4 GBs then it would run a much larger selection of Distros. I would recommend XFCE desktop also. MX is a good choice. But really needs more ram.
Good luck on your search.
P.S. even 2 GBs would help.

LXDE and Moksha Desktops are lighter than XFCE. You can try the following:

  1. https://www.bodhilinux.com/
Bodhi Linux, a lightweight distribution featuring the fast Moksha Desktop. Built on top of Ubuntu.
  2. https://www.debian.org/
    Choose LXDE Desktop
If you can upgrade RAM to 2 GB or 4 GB your PC will run much smoother and faster.

You can try Manjaro XFCE edition. XFCE desktop fulfills all your need you mentioned. If you looking for Security and Stability and Privacy, Manjaro can be great.
