All these forwarders are a neat thing, even if I rarely use them. I’ve got a lifetime @linux.com address that I’ve used earlier in forums and mailing lists.

They do provide an enhanced service. They block lots of spam for one thing. Then sending email that is not blocked by other providers is not easy. SPF, DKIM, greylisting, antivirus, …
Providing a good quality email service is not easy.
