How do I choose between the Linux Mint MATE, Cinnamon, Xfce or Debian editions?

Agree.
Android wins on that criterion

The quality and polish of Ubuntu without snap. Cinnamon is also a plus for some coming from Windows. Just a bit more familiar in some ways.

I do wish this saying would ā€œgo awayā€ Linux and Windows, in my opinion, have nothing in common!!!

Nothing?

An iPhone and Android have almost nothing in common, but you tap on icons to launch applications in both.

For me, going from Windows to Mint Cinnamon was pretty straight forward. It was a fairly early distro for me that worked well, and I liked the interface. Maybe it was as much the ease of install and driver support as interface. It’s been several years.

For yourself ā€œmaybeā€, but for all the Linux users on "its foss’ why not try a Linux, that just might not look and feel and install, and be like ā€œWindowsā€? I for one would not even tell a potential ā€œWindows Crossoverā€ that Linux is anything like Windows, I would maybe say, try Linux, you may like it!!!
For myself, if I had to rely on Linux to run my main PC, it would more than likely wind up on the old burn pile.
How can a topic be solved, if there never was an answer, just opinions.

There is no real answer to this question, why linux mint …
Look and feel, familiar interface, it works … the list could go on and on.
Now most technology users have smart phones and are used to just click or swipe and go. Many years back to change from a phone that made calls only, to sms, and now to android or apple, would be massive. Many older people chose just a phone with big buttons they could see easy but now they use android devices with very large icons.
Revolution of change can be hard.
Had a linux looking mac interface really taken off then perhaps that would be the leader. I know docker exists and even tried using it but its not the same.
I will stick to mint

There was never an answer, because this topic was not a problem in the first place.
Topics are not all about problems and solutions… even though discourse seems to think so.

Hi Daniel Phillips @Daniel_Phillips ,
The purpose of creating this topic was to discuss which edition of Linux Mint should be recommended and I was restricted to this, because most users in general and they will talk about this forum, recommend Linux Mint, but there are different editions, as you know. I only closed it because I compiled all the suggestions that were and with my experience, I believe it was the best summary we could give to a user new to Linux, looking for information on which edition to install and who reads the topic.

During 2006 and 2010 I compiled the kernel several times to customize it. Now I use Linux Mint Cinnamon as my day-to-day distro.
On a personal note, does this mean that I’m not using Linux?

I’m an old man, I evolved with the Spectrum, DOS, Amiga, Windows (practically all of them), Android and Linux.

For me, in over 40 years of using computers, what I’ve always liked is the graphical environment and Linux Mint, even now, after testing numerous distros, for me, is the one with the best graphical environment. Are there other distros with excellent graphical environments? Of course there are, but this distro with Cinnamon is the most ā€œcomfortableā€ for me.

You may have read in another thread of mine that I’m setting up a server (stopped at the moment due to lack of time), but I would never install Linux Mint on that server, it doesn’t make sense and I believe you agree with me.

I think it was you who said that I want to try CentOS (again, I haven’t done it yet due to lack of time and I have other projects pending), but is that what makes me a user who is trying Linux? Or won’t I be a user who is evolving in Linux, my friend?

I’ll give you an example that has nothing to do with Linux and I ask you not to take it the wrong way, is an example of cars (I don’t know anything about this and I don’t want to talk about cars please!): from what I observe, there is a tendency to buy cars in black, red, grey and white.
Why this choice of colors?
Aren’t they all cars?
Aren’t there more colors?
And then there are cars with automatic gearboxes and others with manual gearboxes, aren’t they both cars?
And electric cars, which don’t even have a fuel engine or ā€œtraditionalā€ automatic or manual gearshifts and don’t run on gasoline as well as diesel, aren’t they cars?

When I bought my car, I chose the color, asked to sit in to see if it was comfortable and asked to see the instrument panel to see if I liked the look.
I didn’t want to know the brand or the size of the tires or open the hood (I saw it) to see the engine, or know the weight and length of the car, I wanted to know if I felt comfortable inside the cabin, if I liked the instrument panel and since I liked it, I bought it and chose the color, I bought gray and there were lots of colors for the same car, color and model so common, even sometimes I even make a mistake and try to get into a car that is not mine.

By this I mean that, in my personal opinion, looks and comfort are more important than the rest of the distro’s features that you might choose, and, as I said, I use a lot more distros than LM.

I don’t want you to disagree with me and I’m happy for you to disagree. The question is, within the LM, how can I decide which LM to choose?

Thank you very much for participating.Your opinion is always important, my friend

That does not apply to me. As you said it is personal.

Like I said ā€œyou are comparing apples to orangesā€ not a big deal, as for myself!!!

I read a story once about someone who bought a new car. They went to the mall and came out and got in ā€œtheirā€ car and drove home. Only to discover they had gotten in a car that looked like their old car and their key worked! They drove back to the mall parking lot and found their new car still parked there. They also found the other owner and explained.

Back to Linux. I think the different desktop environments are more alike than different. They’re just enough different that a person can prefer one over the other. Variety is mostly a good thing I guess.

Thanks for the clarification on your post question. Apart from the menu screen display between favourites in cinnamon being on the left, mate on a seperate arrow right. I dont see much difference for the end user. Just looked at xfce for the first time today and it looks like a cut down selection area, but that was just a few screen shots not used it.

I am not convinced a end user would know the difference , thats the advantage of linux mint look and feel is controlled to feel at home with any.

I have just updated all my computers to lmde 64 bit, took most of the week, too many computers perhaps. I did discover the 32 bit lmde although its version 6 which is the same. The screen options were slightly different and some options had moved, I was trying to modify the menu options as they are in a different place. But so slight not a issue

It is easy to configure the panels in Xfce
I like Xfce mostly because it offers session saving

I have an older box with mint on and just thinking run it slow, change to lubuntu or look again at xfce for a bit more speed. As its only used for odd email and reading papers plus its connected through older phone system on copper its part of the World Wide Wait

Linux Lite… it is still ubuntu based but lighter than lubuntu
@Rosika will tell you about it

Will give that a look, checking the site though has so much publicity guess thats how they find the upkeep.

Do a Gentoo, you can make it as lite as you want!!!

Gentoo does not come with a default GUI…

Hmmm not sure i want to go down that road, prefer one stop shop, but always interesting to look outside the box, thanks

That is right. It leaves everything open for you to choose.
That is what Daniel meant… you can build whatever you prefer.

So is it very much like debian itself, that asks at install which desktop you would like to choose, but then its automatic. Or do you install after its running ?
Complex for a new user ?
Could cause more issues down stream as who does what and who is responsible?
