How easy is break a password in Linux?

I have planned to use encryption when I get a new laptop. I probably will encrypt / and allow my user to login without password. That way only one login prompt will come when powering on the laptop. Need to read more about it. Booting needs an unencrypted partition AFAIK.

I think /boot needs to be unencrypted. Not sure, never tried.
