When I saw your intro, and your avatar - I was tempted to make a Dennis Nedry meme long the lines of :
Dennis : āSo you run arch?ā
Dennis : āSee nobody cares!ā (along the lines of āBTW I run archā )ā¦ Only kidding mateā¦
hahaha that would have been priceless.
Iām actually OS agnostic, as long as itās some form of Linux. Arch just happened to be where things took me.
I agree - Iām also a fanboi of RISC processors - hence why I love having Linux on Raspberry Pi, and UNIX (Darwin) on my MacBook Pro M1 systems
Where thereās a shell thereās a way - āThis is UNIX system, I know this!ā
Dennis is more of a āBTW, I use IRIXā guy anyway
And IRIX is my favourite of all the old school UNIX platformsā¦ I have a couple of SGI Indys (MIPS R4400) under a pile of other stuff I mean to get around to one of these daysā¦ I stupidly took the RAM out of one of them, and misplaced itā¦ Oneās got IRIX 5, the other IRIX 6ā¦ Both came with SGI āwebcamsā too, SGI keyboards, and one SGI monitorā¦ Good thing about the Indy was they had standard PS/2 ports for mice and keyboardā¦
Also have a bunch of old Sun Sparc systems lying around tooā¦
Happy Birthday Itās FOSS! Iāve been a long time reader of the blog. I always find useful tips and tricks on the main blog. Congrats to @abhishek on 11 years and thanks for starting an independent forum.
Thank you @DanTheManDRH
Congrats on the big birthday ā¦
Thank you, @Richard_Schaad
Happy Birthday @itsfoss ,
The forum is helpful as I got comfortable using Linux and Terminal.
I remember those old days when I didnāt knew anything about Linux and started with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS .
Thank you @Aman_Bhatnagar
I feel a real killjoy in writing this message. I canāt exaggerate the respect I have for Itsā Foss and its founder. I have learned very much from it and have welcomed the kind help I have had from Forum members, who offer advice without the supercilious and patronizing responses given in so many other forums. Whenever I have had problems I have turned to this site and rarely been disappointed.
I have to say at this point that despite my gratitude, I can no longer use the site. It is sad, that like so many features in modern life, Itās Foss couldnāt observe the maxim if itās not broke, donāt fix it. The innovations have been just too much for an elderly apprentice. The log-in procedure is tedious and often has to be repeated several times whilst using the forum. There are now gradations of membership, although I thoroughly approve of asking members to subscribe. There are too many compartments and difficulty in discovering which is the correct one. I canāt recall all the issues that have annoyed me, but they exist, and I found nothing negative in the previous incarnation.
I do wish the site all the best and appreciate what is being done, but Iām afraid Iām out.
Belated Happy Birthday ItsFOSS!!
Man ItsFOSS was the first guide to Linux for me!
I feel like I learnt the alphabets(A, B, Cā¦) of linux from it!
The community support I received was also top-notch!
Thanks to the founder @abhishek sir for creating this amazing platform for us linux users!!
Cheers,
Hrishikesh.
But why U canāt use it??
I know that they have a membership now and the log is a bit tedious but still many non-pro users like me are enjoying by learning something new and helping others! And I guess you should enjoy with us too!
Hi @ljohn
That does not happen to me. I just stay logged in. Even if I turn my computer off, when I restart , the browser just brings up the tab and I am logged in.
I know the business of copying a code from email to login is tedious, but it is helping to protect us from bots.
Regards
Neville
Dear @ljohn
Thank you for your appreciation and for voicing your opinion on the new unified login system. I would be sad to see you go.
The idea was to glue the different platforms together and I understand the new system may sound tedious, specially at the beginning.
This gets even more frustrating if you frequently change browsers and devices.
But if you save sessions and use cookies, you should stay logged in for weeks on the same browser and device.
The forum can also be āadded as an applicationā thanks to PWA on both smartphones and desktop. This will keep you logged in to the browser-based app.
The password-less system with login link is the new āsecureā login model and youāll find more websites and services moving to it in the future.
Again, it may all sound overwhelming at first. Several regular members like @nevj also did not like it in the beginning. But gradually, you get comfortable with the new system.
Thank you for the kind words, @TypeHrishi
Congratulations! Best wishes for future!
More power to the itsFOSS community!
Thank you @Rohit
This PWA thing is nothing short of awesome. Using Firefox on my smart phone and the whole Itās Foss (main site and community) works just like a well written Android App.
Read a bit about this but this is my first real experience with it.
WELL DONE
I didnāt know that people would use it. Otherwise, I would have highlighted it to the readers.
Yes a bunch cleaner interface on a smart phone makes better (cleaner) use of the limited space.
I spend a good deal of time driving aging parents (mine and wifes) to appointments,so plenty of time waiting in car with cell phone ā¦
