Thanks did not check that
Sad, because the vertical selection is unique, and sometimes it is extremly useful.
At one stage i was installing lubuntu as i had a group of clients on old machines not capable of running a modern faster bigger linux system it came with
AbiWord
But think it would be considered too big as it looks and feels like libre office word.
Checking, its mentioned on the ubuntu site but trying to get to the original either the site is down or they have just stopped production.

When you want a lighter weight, is that because you want less commands or disk size or memory use ?[/quote]
Basically I want fewer commands, and for it NOT to try to format or otherwise manage what I put in… LibreOffice has tons of features that might be great if one is working on some sort of fancy publication, but make it really hard to find the simple stuff in the clutter…
I’d like something that is intended for simple 1-10 page documents, not the next Russian novel, or a fancy magazine… However I also want something that can instantly opened by the fancy word processor programs, which means using a standard format like .ODT (Markdown and similar don’t get it because of the requirement to use (and learn) a bunch of secret codes… I don’t need a Wordstar throwback…)
In many ways the basic editor in most forum software is pretty close to ideal, with possibly a few basic additions like picking fonts / sizes, and simple formatting like lists (moving a line up/down levels) and alignment…

It was said about word at one stage 80 % of the users only use 20 % of its capabilities.
I know windows users do everything on write (even notepad) instead of word.
I worked with one large uk company that put AppleWorks on all the apple computers as it did enough for the requirements they had. Based on a suite of wordprocessing spreadsheet office apps, similar to microsoft works, very low key stuff.
Sounds about right… I’d use my text editor (Kate) much more if it just had things like being able to change font size and do things like bold and italic to make it easy for me to spot division points… i.e. I have “notes” documents on each of my chairs with things like relevant exerpts from the service and parts manuals, alternative sources, mods that I’ve done and so on… It makes it easier to find info if I can have bolded large headers for sections like wheels, motors, and so on…

Sounds like styles.
Just out of interest what are you building or modifying ?
The forum editor uses Markdown ( and/or HTML) but it also provides a few buttons to help
It seems what you are looking for is something similar to Markdown, but with better file compatability and a GUI to avoid ‘secret codes’
Did anyone mention Scribus? It is supposed to be good for making flyers… ie short pamphlets.
I appreciate your comments. To play with markdown I installed (snap) Remarkable from App Center on Ubuntu 24.10 and found that no matter what I do, the right-side screen is always blank. I can’t see the styled version of what I type on the left. Then I uninstalled that and downloaded Remarkable from the Remarkable website, a .deb file, and installed that (over the objections of Ubuntu) and it seems to work correctly. Maybe I’ll find some good use for it, exporting to pdf or html for other eyes. I think maybe Ubuntu 24.10 has some Wayland? issues with some apps – things not displaying right. My exported html file looked OK in both Firefox and Libre Office Writer. The exported pdf looked OK in Document Viewer but normal text font seems small.
NOTE ON ABIWORD – I installed Abiword on Ubuntu 24.10 using the App Center. It seems to work OK for creating a file with the exception that if you create a heading or insert a picture on the LAST LINE of a document, and then hit the ENTER key to create a new line after the heading or insert, the heading or picture will disappear. You can’t do these things on the last line and then add another line. If you insert on any line before the last, it works fine. There is a worse problem though. If you try to open a .txt file, AbiWord crashes.
This may have something to do with Ubuntu 24.10 too, I suppose.
Does the same happen on other wordprocessing apps or just AbiWord ?
I have not used it for a while and the web site has gone for the product.
Wasn’t Abiword unmaintained?
I tried opening their website from wikipedia, even though it’s a mirror, my browser does not connect to the website.
EDIT: their last release was from 2021.
You probably got a later version getting it direct from the owners website.
There are other markdown renderers that have a dual view
I currently think keenwrite is the best. You have to download a binary from here
Our local schools tossed out Apple and converted totally to Chromebooks. Teachers had unlimited Google storage and everyone used Google Docs and Google Sheets. Google Docs is a fine, reliable word processor.
I use Libre Office because I steer clear of the intrusive Google ecosystem. If it were less intrusive, I’d probably use Google Docs.
For our association we simply use google docs for everything as there are only 5 of us so if one edits a document we can all update or change it or simply read it.
In truth 1 creates 2 read the others are not capable technology wise.
We use docs, sheets and the presentation tool, but that is just to do good looking flyers to print not presentation stuff.
I was surprised for our assembly general one member said I will do the presentation, i know how i have done so many… it was like a 10 year old would do, things appearing all over the place, different fonts and colours, some did not fit on the page, no idea about slide masters … luckily he has resigned from the post as vice president not for this reason just he was an expert in everything all talk no action.
Presentations are the most difficult thing I ever tried, especially with live demos.
Anything can go wrong. You need to be able to ‘think on your feet’. Glad I am out of it.
I am quite lucky that done more than i care to mention and got away with them. But it takes correct preparation and subject knowledge plus a backup plan.
With our guy he just was all talk and know knowledge
My primary interest is mobility related, since I’m a paraplegic I HAVE to be interested in wheelchairs… However I work on pretty much anything that lands on my bench, and one of my frequent uses of a text editor / word processor is to make a notes file on anything I’m working on…
I usually start w/ ID’ing the item and links or file references to any manuals or other documentation I can find, along with particularly useful quotes, page numbers, part numbers, and so on, along with my own notes on what I’ve done, or plan to…
If I’m trying to figure something out I’m likely to look at a bunch of different sources and pull out the best / most useful bits from each… I often do this when cooking - look up 20 different recipes and compare ingredients and methods then combine along w/ my own inspiration to make my own…
I’m also the Chair of our town’s Disability Commission and have to make our meeting agenda each month, and often turn it into the minutes after. These need to be in .ODT or .DOC formats for the other members of the committee and Open Gov’t requirements…
None of these are complex documents but they benefit from having the ability to use more font features than you get w/ a basic text editor, but don’t need all the fancy crapola that comes w/ Libre Office. (I will NOT use Google because of privacy issues - and I know that there is NO CLOUD - just other people’s computers…)
I also despise “Styles” as I find one of my major battles w/ LibreOffice is keeping it FROM using them as I want to be the one that decides how to format my documents…
ex-Gooserider
I think I mentioned what I wanted way back at the start of this thread… Partial quote:
Blockquote I do NOT want my word processor to do formatting for me!
I especially do NOT want it to CHANGE the format of things I’ve already done!
I don’t need to have to hunt through large numbers of icons, or 20 different menus to do simple things
In many ways the basic text editor is what I want, except that I want to be able to use multiple fonts, or things like bold and italics, etc. I’d almost like to have the same level or possibly just a bit more functionality than I get in the editors in a lot of different forum software… (like this one)
I haven’t seen any options for this kind of light weight program - it would be great if someone could just export one of the forum editors into a standalone program…
I would like to be able to save (preferably natively) in Open Document (.odt) format just so that if I do need more power for the occasional item, I can easily import it into LO Write
I’m not all that concerned about what the program does “behind the scenes” if the interface gives me what I want, and I end up with the right file format…
I’m not a dev beyond the simple Arduino or script file level, but if I was, I’d be sorely tempted to look at whether there would be a way to strip all the extra stuff out of LO Write in order to make a “Light” version that was reasonably close to what I described above… Seems like that would be the best way to ensure file compatibility…
