I am truly sorry you feel this way, but side-stepping the issue of what ¨proprietary” means, is not logical!!!
But should we include other product instead of wine to run windows apps
I dont know any or use them perhaps we should have such a discussion ?
There are some apps that prefer windows , accounting, cad, planning etc where there is no real alternatives I hesitated for mac software to run on linux such as freehand, photoshop, illustator but not sure they are currently.
There is none, of course.
Two different pairs of shoes. Everyone can install and run whatever they want, even $NON_FOSS. But trying to discuss such software in detail here is IMHO clearly unwanted.
IMHO no problem, as long as the topic is limited to how to get them running on Linux. No app-specific discussions.
Proprietary has nothing to do with piracy. In this context your statement is indeed bullshit.
You are welcome to your own option
But for me a call to help needs a reply to the best of our ability
A short while back we had questions on libre office, styles, paragraphs, table of content, indexing, page numbering. I think it was an interesting question and came from a regular contributer to our site several of us offered different suggestions based on our knowledge and experiance. Some of us gained from that exchange and I would encourage that.
Similar if asked a question on libreoffice calc I would find that interesting using functions, formula, data manipulation.
Yes I know libreoffice has its own help pages but adds spice to our site.
there is currently a question on computer screens posted by Neville, one could argue that is not linux related as its hardware. But again interesting interaction about games, screen size, resolution etc.
Personnaly I have no great désire to learn or use obscure command lines on how to copy files when I know I can click, drag and drop. But I accept others want or need that.
I want to encourage free open conversation not just have more rules. Excluding religion, politics I am very happy with the direction the site is going down.
Not happy with a question do not reply, something of interest to add to the story, then post. If we go off track no big deal.. we are a group of adults !
OK, my wording maybe wasn’t that optimal.
I’ll try to keep this in mind.
But I still have and use my right to amend my opinion on a particular topic.
To me proprietary means owned by a company.
In the case of software…It does not convey anything about what they do with it… it may be free or nonfree, open or closed source, licensed or copyrighted or unprotected.
With “proprietary” I meant closed source paid for software.
For me it’s closed source, paid or free.
So what do you think it means?
You are triggering me to mention proprietary stuff which seems more or less to be banned already ![]()
I take the risk, and mention Crossover.
It’s paid and proprietary, so everything evil
…
There’s only one mitigating circumstance, that Codeweavers contribute a lot to the WINE project (if I’m not mistaken…).
I heard of Winapps, which also helps run windows apps on Linux, but it uses virtual machines with real windowses under the hood.
I understand. For me it meant only closed source, not necessarily paid.
I share @abu 's opnion on this, so talking about them is OK until it has some connection to FOSS, for example how to make it run on Linux, how to tweak a distro to be able to run it, and such.
Deeper problem solving regarding those software pieces doesn’t belong here, such a question would be how to deal with pivot tables in Excel365 on Windows 11 through Onedrive connection…
Excuse me @callpaul.eu but this a wrong example, because the question relates strictly to a FOSS masterpiece: Libre Office.
Every now & then I have some problem with Davinci Resolve: I look up the Blackmagic forum, or dig up a tutorial from Casey Faris, because such problems don’t belong here as they are far beyond “how to run Davinci on Linux”. But I was trying hard to do my best to help to the guy installing and running DR on Linux (sadly failed then), forgive me, I forgot his nick here.
I see nothing wrong in such a topic.

Very well said! ![]()
So fine in libre office (never tried them if they exist)
But imagine a user asks about an equivalent in Linux before converting so will office 365 run on mint. I would reply with yes. Then go into wine.
Never tried cross weaver although know about it
I discovered winapps recently when looking to run teams on Linux as the chrome interface did not work text only no sound. So played with different settings. But decided in the end of they want teams I am on holiday so bugger the meeting… my protest.
I think I understood what you meant.
Most people use the term that way… at least closed source.
I appreciate FOSS software because it has for many years allowed me to do things that I could not otherwise afford to do.
Non-free systems can be expensive , especially if you need build tools.
Or unless it offers a free version!!! I will not turn the Linux I run into a platform for software meant to run on Windows!!!
During the install of Linux Mint, I am asked a question of whether or not to include proprietary software. I assume the question refereed to the free version. So far I haven’t been sent a bill. ![]()
Really? Every software with a non-free license is made for running on Windows? ![]()
Of course your personal preference to keep any non-free away is fully ok. But nobody ever said that it is a bad thing to use a non-free piece of software to get the job done. If I need software, and it costs money and there isn’t any free version available, I pay the fee. There is (IMHO) nothing wrong with it.
A man after my own heart, true Yorkshire spirit FREE Such an important word.
Is this referring to the non-free repositories where apt can pull from?
That’s normally about using community developed video drivers or ones provided by Nvidia (for example). Also included can be codecs for audio and video. I always include the proprietary software, so things work more smoothly.
I really don’t know, but I don’t believe so. It is just a question asked at the time I install Mint.
If I think about it, I will write down the actual question and post it later.
