Currently I use Tintero for my writing. It’s a good application which gets frequent updates. It’s got versions for every platform I use (desktop and Android) and has cloud support.
Only problem is: it’s not open source. Now, I am aware of novelWriter, which IS open source, but that one only runs on desktop and it does not have cloud support (which I need). There are various other options, but none I’ve found work on desktop as well as Android and have cloud storage support.
Does anyone know of some writing app which does what I want?
I don’t do a lot of writing, but if I was just writing (not publishing books…), I would start with writing in markdown, which is glorified plain text with basic niceties like headings, internal and external links, and images/graphs/diagrams. There are many clients on all platforms. I would keep or backup the documents on Dropbox (or similar) which gives you the cloud, but makes it look like a local folder. I would encrypt everything before putting it in the cloud so it can’t be scraped or breached…
I have been using Zim, but it’s Linux-only and has its own dialect of markdown. It is aso lacking a normal print option - which I need. I am exploring switching to Joplin, but that appears to require a bunch of editing after importing.
Markdown is lovely. It’s as convenient as text, but you can add graphics and basic effects with almost no effort. Way easier than using a full word processor. It can’t do all the fancy stuff a word processor can do, but it lets you just write and build content while hardly thinking about the tool.
