Yes, I know and Linux-Pam configured and installed first for lightdm and the lightdm-gtk-greeter!! Can be time consuming when all the pieces do not fit together!!
You are not kidding. I have spent months with xfce in antiX… and I dont have to compile
Just learning what combines with what takes forever… it is not documented.
There are too many interacting components in a DE … even in a simple DE like Xfce. It should be monolithic like the kernel.
Yes and I think you would enjoy building LFS!!!
Well after another kernel config I finally can play music with the xfce Parole music player!! May try the SMPlayer for video playing!!
MPV is OK. I dont play videos much so I would not really know.
Lazy me … I use VLC the default, but like Neville don’t watch that much mainly through YouTube, till the adverts drive me crazy
VLC is a load to compile from source, way too heavy for LFS, and what I need, and MPV will be just fine!!
Compiled the deps for LFS MPV and compiled MPV, and it plays .mp4 files, just as well as VLC!!
I did not know that, again because I use quick fixes I just got to the repository and click install, at one stage it was the default on install but then it changed but jo idea when or why, as I dont use it much no big deal
When one learns Linux then learn to install Linux from source, it can be an eye-opener!!
I 8magine your knowledge of linux now is far greater than mine, bravo, I cannot find the time or generate the interest to do it myself, that’s why I still to off the shelf fixes link mint where I can sell a working system in a few hours, I still have my mind set on making money and running a business from it rather than struggling through hours of commands. Perhaps a project for me later in life when I am no longer running around and can utilise my time better
Yes, I found MPV quite usable.
I think you should get rid of all unnecessary authentication services … pam, polkit, sudoers, logind, …
and just have the real components talk to each other without obstruction.
It can be done … see Hyperbola Linux.
There would be far less to compile, smoother operation without incessant password entry, and a smaller footprint.
Why would I do that? The PC is running just fine!! I use Slackware for grub and boot LFS and XP from the grub menu!! The best LFS, I have yet to compile, and get running!! I am very pleased with what I have accomplished with this old PC and it’s hardware!!
It would be smaller and less annoying to configure.
You dont need all these barriers that authorisation puts up in a home PC.
I know you have built a good system, but it could be pruned.
Sorry, but I do not believe Hyperbola Linux is the answer for this Dell PC!!
I think pruning is the answer to security bloat.
It is not necessary for every component of the system to ask permission every time it wants to communicate with another component .
This is where all is installed!!
I now have Flatpak installed for LFS and am using some Flatpak
app versions of packages that I do not wish to compile from source,
like VLC!!
It does not use as much memory as snaps … it shares libraries between multiple flatpak apps.
