System freezes in LMDE7

I am not that organised, I Scrabble in a book I bought years ago written by a fellow member of our site Linux Pocket Guide by Daniel Barrett, mine is edition 3 and I hesitate to buy new as dont think I can copy all the notes I made into the new book.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will do that if/when it happens again. For now I am very happy with LMDE 7

Thank you for the suggestions. I might as well take a note on paper as they might not be accessible during a “freeze”

Cinnamon with software rendering doesn’t even work. I get a black screen and a working mouse cursor. I can get out of it using the restart X11 hotkey (thank you @callpaul.eu )

Back to an original question did you update or install clean ?

As he was moving from LM to LMDE, I think it’s a fresh install. I don’t know of any migration path.

Installed from scratch. (Apparently “This topic has been closed”. Should I open another one under Linux Mint?)

No its not closed, I thought we had a solution so flagged it as such, will go back and remove the flag. Better if we keep on this same question, that way others can read back and look at what has been done or suggested before.

Ok done that

Lets find out what you are using in more detail

Open the System Reports application in the Mint menu. Click the System Information tab. Your System Information should then appear in the right panel.

If you can give us that detail please

Dont think there is one, I have never seen it offered.

Nothing jumps out as a source for your problems.

Do you keep your system updated ?

Does the problem occur when you are doing one thing such as web browsing and if so which browser do you use (chrome, firefox etc)

Is it at set times in the day ?

After restarting does the problem clear complete

I do not agree here. Maybe my point of view is too rigid, but what we do here is called topic/thread hijacking. It’s simply unfair for the OP. Far better would be if one of the @moderators moved the entire LMDE part to a new topic.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Alfred. I would feel more comfortable if the messages starting from message 37 (I can re-post it here for completeness) were moved to a new topic.

In any case I haven’t had any “freezes” recently so either it was fixed by an update or I haven’t run into the combination of software that causes it

I will surely come back to this topic as there are warnings and errors on the ~/.xsession-errors file

I agree, but I dont know how to move some replies to a new topic.
I shall read up and have a practice.
As long as the original post author has got what they needed, I dont think it matters greatly, but it is untidy.

Update
The move to a new topic is completed.

Thanks Neville I had just read the reply and wondered if it was possible or how to do it, perhaps you can tell me for future réf. Yes wanted to do it or close the question as solved then pick it up again but worried would loose vital stuff in the move or close.

I marked it as solved unless the situation changes but at that stage do it as new as the story will have changed with updates anyway

What I noticed was the vivaldi browser.
That would be my first thing to check… substitute another browser

My default browser is Firefox. I use Vivaldi mostly as an IMAP Mail client for my Gmail account. I have both open most of the time and they “live together in perfect harmony” as the song goes. I did notice a few warnings regarding Cinnamon on the ~/.xsession-errors file but I haven’t had any “freezes”. I will post here (in a new topic) if/when that happens. Thanks!
