What is a decent, low cost graphics card for dual monitor application? [ Resolved ]

The graphics card I am using now is an NVIDIA Corporation GK208 [GeForce GT 710B] (rev a1). I constantly have freeze up issues and run slow. I have tried everything to get this to work properly but nothing has worked. I’d rather just buy a new graphics card.
System and hardware info:
Linux Mint Tara 19 64 bit (cinnamon)
Kernel: Linux 4.15.0-43-generic (x86_64)
Motherboard: MSI H110M PRO-VD

Do you use proprietary divers for the card, or nouveau?

You should explain what you would use that card for (other than a dual monitor setup), what price you would be willing to pay and you should post all your specs.

My video card also is it ( GT 710 Galax ) and in past
also some issues with freezes ( included Ubuntu ).
Well this is a complex problem, because after some months
this issues desappear.Your kernel is recent, and this stay more complex yet.
What manufacturer of your video card ? ( no very relevant this ask ).
My suggestion for you is a card GT 420, however no more strong with games. :new_moon_with_face:

I do not do any gaming at all. I just use the PC for emails, editing photos etc. I always keep the system up to date, including the kernel. I started out using the proprietary drivers but then installed drivers from the Nvidia site. When that didn’t work I tried turning off ACPI while booting. Needless to say, it didn’t work.
The reason I didn’t post all my specs is that I tried everything, and have been through this 100 times in the last year. I don’t want to try to fix it anymore, I just want a basic card that is going to work right out of the box.

The ones from the website are the properietary ones, except you used the older versions from the respository, which nobody should use.

I tried to suggest a fitting card, but first I need to know your budget.

I want to stay below $250.00 US.

Used or new? What is acceptable to you?

Also once you are at it, you might as well tell me if you want to get the best for about $240 or if you rather stay way below that, if possible.

Usually with Linuxment you open the DRIVER MANAGER and install their recommended version i.e 390.

Links show how to do so either from GUI or CLI.

I use a Radeon/ATI DDR3 tech 2GB graphic card in a Dell 7040 with Intel 6th gen & DDR4 tech, to enhance my visual experience. In a Debian stretch installed system, to get full function I had to edit the /etc/initramfs-tools/modules from Intel to Radeon.

  • drm
  • i915 modeset=1 for Intel
  • nouveau modeset=1 for Nouveau & nVidia
  • radeon modeset=1 for Radeon

It works and has improved my Dell visual experience and plus it is better than the recommended card by a Dell rep whom said would do the job, when I phoned the horse’s mouth about this subject.

The newer 8th gen desktop has GTX1080 6GB Nvidia for gaming, but got fed up with Windoze and deleted it, M$, mehhh, tis merde.

I believe that to be true, I’m just saying that your computer is a little restricted by your GPU. Does not mean you need more. Just informing you, if you ever would want to buy a new PC part, the graphics card should come first. It’s even so old, it still uses DDR3, even your actual RAM is of a newer generation…

My friend is currently setting up his 100% compatability gaming mode on Linux. He will run Windows in a VM on his main Linux OS, but the point is that the VM will use a dedicated graphics card. If you anyone is interested, I might post the results of his setup.

I don’t mind a used on, but I’d rather new if possible.

Actually my friend, it is due to lack of space between the PSU and Heatsink fan. Otherwise it is a sterling daily driver for every day computing tasks, except gaming.

I’m not a dedicated gamer, casual at best.

Have tried Steam, once you jump through their Windoze style hoops and install at £xx or $xx per game, buy their Steam controller and all the other rigamarole of Corporate America relieving of as much money as possible to play games on this site.

As much as I like to while away the odd hour for entertainment these days at a screen (age related and poor mobility), I’m from the generation where entertainment and fun, mucking around with your mates outside was non chargeable. Two jumpers for goal posts, game on.

I would semi interested with your mates idea.
