I never listen to the radio or any music service. I make up my own cds or USBs with music from the 1950’s up to the early 1990’s. There are only a handful of songs from the 2000’s that I like. I like garage rock, blues, bluegrass, pop rock, psychedelic, country, some Motown, some R&B, some alternative songs, instrumentals…I mix it all together. I can listen to songs that I like or love and never have to hear any ads nor do I care if anyone else likes what I like. I am still finding songs from years or decades ago that I forgot about or never heard. How about Mr. Blue by Clear Light or OMD by Dusk or Misery by The Dynamics?
Just to progress slightly
How do you listen to the music?
In my lifetime I remember AM, long wave, short wave, then we all went to FM which was going to be the future but that was replaced with DAB and now DAB+. The UK is still talking about switching off FM in 2030.
TV is going the same way in switch off of satellites so we get everything through our internet connection.
Plus telephone landlines of copper to be replaced by fibre but that’s another story.
As we are international on this site how is it going to effect you ? And listening to music
Hi Rosika,
I think forest.ogg
I am not sure how I play it in relation to my forest background image, but there will be a way.
Where can I download it from?
Regards
Neville
If you can support your own server for your music files you can run your own music server.
I use Navidrome:
I got a transistor radio for my birthday when I was about 10. That’s probably where I got hooked on music, plus my parents had a large console stereo system with AM/FM/33/45. It had a remote speaker that would play whatever was on the console even way out in the barn. It just had to be plugged into the same electrical system. Pretty cool.
Then we progressed into 8-track tapes, cassette tapes, and CDs. I have a decent collection and have digitized it all.
About 12 years ago I got a new car with XM Radio and loved that. Eventually, I phased out of that and into streaming iHeartRadio using my cell phone or computer at home.

Hi Neville, ![]()
Great, I just tried it out.
It´s basically some birds chirping and a bit of low-noise wind in the background.
In order for the wind to be discernible you´d need to set the volume of mpv a bit higher:
This way it´s set to 145% while the system´s sound volume remains at 35% in my case.
So it´s just the mpv process which would be affected. ![]()
I can send you the file forest.ogg if you like.
It´s 30.7 MB in size. Here´s the collection of all of the sounds:
ll | grep '.ogg'
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 9,6M Jan 26 2016 coffee_shop.ogg
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 3,1M Jan 26 2016 fire.ogg
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 30M Jan 26 2016 forest.ogg
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 5,1M Jan 26 2016 night.ogg
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 33M Jan 26 2016 rain.ogg
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 4,6M Jan 26 2016 sea.ogg
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 12M Jan 26 2016 storm.ogg
-rw-r--rw- 1 rosika rosika 4,6M Jan 26 2016 wind.ogg
Of course you could always install the programme anoise, if you like:
- ANoise › Wiki › ubuntuusers.de # in German
- ANoise in Launchpad # on launchpad
Personally I find it more convenient to play the soulds I need with the help of mpv using its loop parameter. So I only need the .ogg files.
Many greetings from Rosika ![]()
That is a bit much for you. Cant I download it from somewhere.?
I may provide it to you personally, if you like.
Cheers from Rosika ![]()
The Wife and I have gathered around the PC tonight and I play the Guitar along with Chordify and we sing Gospel music, beats watching TV!!!
So yes Gospel, is important, but I also play along with CCR, Eagles, Bon Jovi, Bryan, Adams, Alabama, Alan Jackson and even Elvis!!!
It is my fun time with the PC!!!
Do you play guitar in the Carter family style with a thumb plectrum and the melody on the bass strings?
I can do a little of that, but my playing is more rhythm style, I use a lot of barre cords and the top three strings and make use of a capo!!! I have played in several bands that have gotten together, in my area!!! You can use your imagination, to figure out the venue!!!
I love watching people play guitar like that - i.e. melody and rhythm with one hand…
In metal - it’s the guitar melody and the riff… Not many guitarists seem to do that… There’s only one I’ve really noticed - that’s Mike Scheidt from Portland Oregon - and his band YOB - odd name for a band - they seem to be deeply spiritual songs - and their sub-genre is either “Doom Metal” or “post-metal”…
I’ve seen him (online) do the same song on stage with a bass player and drummer - and another video of him in the woods, playing the same song on acoustic guitar…
It’s only 11 minutes - the electric version of the song on the album is 18 minutes - both versions send shivers down my spine - and nearly move me to tears…
It must take a huge amount of discipline to be able to do melody, rhythm, and sing at the same time - I can barely pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time ![]()
He’s actually a fan of one of my favourite country singer songwriters - Townes Van Zandt - and he’s on a compilation album of Van Zandt covers (most of the other musos are also mostly known for heavy metal or very heavy music)…
Here’s his cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Rake” : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA3m8hkmwM8
You are not kidding… that is clever. It might be easier with a piano, but a guitar is such a fiddly beast of an instrument.
I have tried… and failed, and I cant sing either.
I just put on the radio and if I like a song, I add it to my Apple Music playlist, that rarely gets played.
Occasionally, as I play the piano, I just sit down with headphones and play a tune or two. I also create music using Garage Band and Audacity.
Kate Bush Running up the hill.
Funny this should pop up now, i am just replying to a message on my phone about what type of music we should select for 2 large concerts next summer…..
4 groups that have played here over the last 2 years to return
Or something different.
The popular idea is Caribbean, think we missed the boat on bob marley sadly.
Another option was irish, but already that was very strongly rejected by 2 of us.
I asked for earth wind and fire, there is one member still alive and he does concerts in france, so hope they get him.
Hard to choose something to please everyone.
Aerosmith—-pink
My favourite French band is Gojira (transliteration of how the Japanese say and write Godzilla)…
They’re from the south too - but somewhere near the Pyrenees I think? Ondres - near the Atlantic coast…
They (Gojira) played that “Back To The Beginning” gig in Brummie in early July - just a couple of weeks before the Prince of Darkness (no - NOT Lucas auto-electronics - that’s the Lord of Darkness
) left this mortal coil (I’m talking of Ozzy Osborne of course).
