I know, but they don’t want to spend money to buy win10 also!!
To avoid license fee, I suppose.
Correction: “don’t want to buy…”
Corrected!
Many Indians are obsessed with ‘free’ things…
Then let the masses be happy and run there pirated software!!!
The blame goes to the PC sellers, assemblers and AMC contractors. They made the customers habituated to increase sell. Now all of them including users are suffering. Actually India is not a developed country and whatever our ministers show off to the rest of the world to make them think that India is RICH, the per capita income is very low compared to developed countries. That’s why people tend to save money how much little it might be.
But the masses are addicted to internet and it will be better to access internet with using a FREE OS rather than using a pirated copy of W11 because this time Microsoft may not overlook the use of pirated W11 by masses.
Yes I know, before we were married my wife shared her home with a India exchange student, she was very polite and very dedicated, and she finally got her green card and became a US citizen. We still keep in contact, she was from the Kolkata area of India.
WOW!!! May I know her name? If it is not a privacy concern. Because I had a friend in USA. She was also from Kolkata and her parental home was very near to my residence. She, her husband and her daughter (born in USA) all were settled there but the contact got lost after pandemic. I don’t know how and where she and her family is now.
Not until we could get the OK from her!!! Hope you understand!!!
The Australian picture is very different… 60% Win, 28% MacOS, 2% Linux
Mac is super expensive in my country and in my opinion, using Mac is not much better than using Windows and in case of a Mac, we are more bound to the company, not only by the OS but also by hardware and that is worse, in my opinion obviously. I don’t like company control.
And what about the other 10%?
That 10% hate computers.
I suspect my esteemed colleague @nevj is conflating iOS with MacOS… and the remaining 10% is actually MacOS… which sounds about right…
I don’t really care - I love MacOS - it’s UNIX under the hood… iOS is too supposedly - but to “get under the hood” with the UNIX in iOS (and iPadOS) you have to jailbreak… I have a jailbroken iPad 3 (yeah) when I access the shell on it - it’s basically FreeBSD… But I haven’t even powered it on for years now…
When you compare costs - in 2021 my MacBook Pro M1 (I only bought it 'cause it was UNIX running natively on a RISC processor) - it was about the same price as the base model Dell XPS - and outperformed a base model XPS on a bunch of benchmarks (I bought a GeekBench license to compare it to my Ryzen 7 desktop system)… And the best model Lenovo AMD system was dearer than the MacBook Pro M1.
Horses for courses… Different strokes for different folks…
I actually use my 2nd hand e-bay Lenovo E495 (Ryzen 5 with built in AMD GPU) more than either of my MacBooks - that is - until it runs out of battery… Seriously - Apple Silicon eats Intel and AMD CPU for battery life… I can eke 20 hours out either of my MBP (I have 2 - work supplied me with one in 2022) - I can’t get 4 hours out of my Lenovo ThinkPad Ryzen 5 system running Pop!_OS…
The whole point of a laptop is using it wirelessly… Apple do much better than Intel or AMD in that area…
And I’m ambivalent about UNIX vs Linux - I don’t care - I just want something that will give me a proper bash or zsh shell (actually preferred KSH 10+ years ago)… That’s probably something most Windows users never even consider… Don’t talk to me about WSL - it’s a piece of crap - I know I used it for ~5 years 2016-2019 - paraphrasing the RMS mantra “GNU is GNU’s not UNIX” - WSL is NOT UNIX!
Meanwhile - I’m going to see if I can get IRIX (the best UNIX ever) running in QEMU… I have two Indy workstations - but I don’t dare turn them on - I know they will blow resistors and I’m shit at soldering… plus they’re damn noisy with those SCSI hard drives…
That was roughly read off a graph . Here is a better read
Win 65
OSX 28
Linux 2
ChromOS 2
The rest a mix of unknown and BSD
I dont really understand Mac operating systems. It says OSx. Maybe they dont understand either.?
Anyway it is all Unix and Aust is 28+2= 30 percent Unix, but it is nearly all
I am with Dan, like my mac box, used them for more years than i care to mention, around 1984 and the launch.
As a general comment apple boxes are well made and the system works.
Yes when the get past the best before date and unable to update the os i change to linux no problem.
Basic system is unix and so similar to linux.
The difficulty with the how many users of which system is how apple is counted. Mac OS, OS X, then all the other devices they sell, phones, tablets, watches, fridge, cars, toasters … ok i joke with the last few today but tomorrow who knows !
The site I quoted says the statistics are for Desktops. They list other devices separately, so I think it really is Desktops only.
