Google gmail is always popular
Proton mail is the new kid on the block
Both are free and easy to access anywhere

Your definition of “new” differs from mine. ![]()
Started in 2014, proton mail is going from just doing mail to offering vpn, storage etc. Also being picked up by the computer reporters as where to go next instead of google. But not one I use.
Always difficult to select one over another.
Many do, but many are dropping those these days. Extra cost and effort for very little return.
I think it’s best to have something that is portable. If you move and get a new ISP, your old email may not be available anymore.
I have AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail. Of those, I use Yahoo the most.
Thanks for the the update.
I really should get some altrrnative other than gmail.
Our ISP only provides one email address which we have to share.
Back to the original topic.
There was some sort of discourse update today.
My Samsung internet browser still works, but there is at least one small feature that does not now work.
My DDG browser works fine. I will be using that in future.
Hi Sarah,
My reply is late and I haven’t seen if any of the users have replied the same.
isn’t there a problem with the firewall?
Your IP is 10.0.0.109 (note that it may be dynamic).
I’d start testing by pinging your IP to see if there’s been any response.

How about the loading duration? My Samsung Internet Browser takes 12…15 seconds, each time, to bring up the It’s FOSS community. Same when I connect via home wifi. And the same for all other discourse forums as well. I wonder what amount of data they have to load each time.
Yes, mine too. DDG is slightly faster and it does not seem to generàte nested startups within the one tab.
Chrome on Android is the same… 12 secs startup.
On a PC startups are instant.
I do not understand the difference… my tablet and my PC use the same modem, but the PC is ethernet while the tablet is Wifi. Surely Wifi is not the culprit?
I just did a speed test on my internet link from Android.
It is 55Mbps download, 20Mbps upload… that should be miles fast enough to download a webpage… even a long webpage like itsfoss discourse.
I think browsers in Android must have some primitive rendering algorithms. Other sites are fast.
Discourse sees my tablet as a computer, not as a phone. It sends the normal PC layout, not the phone layout. So it is not a layout difference.
Thanks. It’s good to know that I’m not alone.
Once I have enough time and motivation, I’ll try to find out what they do within the 12 seconds they steal in each invocation.
My thinking at the moment is that itsfoss.community is a very long webpage and Android may cache it differently to a Linux PC.
I tried uninstalling some apps to get more disk space… it had no effect
Clearly no, it’s the discourse software. I’m also in other discourse forums that are much smaller, but show the same delay. Other forums based on phpBB for example, react quick.
For me (in the Netherlands, recent phone) it’s quite responsive. The only delay I have is when loading itsfoss.community website. I guess about 3 seconds?
No delays for me but we are on fibre so would expect that, its slightly slower on my linux pc but it is a 15 year old box so again expected
My Android tablet is about 12 secs. My PC is instant.
I have a discovery to report. I just got a new tablet … supposedly for Christmas but it arrived early. The 12 second delay is not there in the new tablet.
That means it is somehow connected to an Android version issue… my old tablet was Andoid 7… it was getting to the stage where some apps were not coping with modern websites, and could not be updated.
That’s totally unexpected for me. It looks like Discourse is trying to force me to retire my gadgets. ![]()
I feel the same about my lmde 32 bits computers. Every time I try to use them I get messages this is out of Date my tablets never last long enough to become obsolite they tend to die from other things and cost of repair against new not worth it.
The forum webpage fails on older browsers. It must use modern html features.
It is a good way to test a browser.
I think older Android struggles with buffrring large webpages.
I can confirm your assumption. I’ve just checked with my wife’s A12, where it’s quick, and my A8, where it’s slow as usual. Side note: the A12 isn’t a youngster either.
