An alternative funding method would be i.e. for people who do not want to buy Pro an option to donate directly.
Same here. And same on my Android. You need to use some ad blockers, maybe VPN, maybe something else. I use Firefox, strict +AdBlock plus+VPN+mace+privacy batcher and maybe some about: config in Firefox which I can’t remember
No ads never
I can’t even see this if I try (same with Instagram etc)
Edit: I can click any banner you like if it helps. I just prefer plain www without adds.
I have a “geek” sis-in-law and she swears by a very nutty keyboard she designed herself. Unlike this (also weird) one, it is v-shaped in the middle sloping down toward the middle. She has created a mouse clicker operated by her feet. She claims relief from carpal tunnel syndrome via this keyboard.
Oh and .. uBlock got rid of it on these pages. Kinda annoying, a paid subscription should somehow be immune to these very intrusive adverts!
I hate forums which are flooded with ads. I have uBlock Origin and block ads at a lot of places and will do so again if the ads get too intrusive or misleading.
Let us hope Abhishek gets the balance right.
Funny is that:
- Android, Chrome - ads.
- iOS, Safari - ads.
- iPadOS, Edge - none.
- Computer, Firefox - yes.
- Computer, Epiphany - none.
OK it seems to get stranger and stranger in this FOSSverse. Having deployed uBlock origin, itsfoss.community is now prompting me for a password, which it never did before. I disabled uBlock browser extension, and it is still insistent on me creating a password specifically for the community.
Also, I saw a prompt for adding a passkey, which I would prefer over a password, however evidently no way to do the changeover. [EDIT: I found it under account security settings, wonder how long this option has been there?]
I know this is a bit off-topic, but since @abhishek has kindly responded about the advert recently insinuated into this forum, can possibly comment on the former SSO from itsfoss.com strangely not working, and whether it was related to uBlock origin?
OK if I see it once that would be fine; however the banner shows every time I use PgDn or PgUp, which is quite annoying. Maybe a CSS check would find a way to limit the number of times the banner is displayed.
Saw them plenty of times, and I believe I’m a Plus member. Pretty sure I’m not a moderator at this time.
Weird thing though: when I created a password/passkey for itsfoss.community, the ads are no longer showing even with uBlock Origin disabled in the firefox extensions. Think this must be related.
The flood of ads for this ridiculous keyboard tells me Abishek doesn’t have the balance right yet.
It is the old login system. Check out
I’ve activated uBlock Origin on the website; ads are just too intrusive.
The former SSO thing won’t be working on the forum anymore.
You were seeing ads before but not anymore because you were not a member of the Plus group in the forum (which I had to do manually). You can see a Star on your profile now, indicating the Plus status.
There is no need of a passkey. Password change option has always been there.
Ad frequency has been reduced and you’ll see them only in a few places.
You don’t need to. You are a Pro member. You won’t see ads when you are logged in.
That’s newsletter sponsorship.
I actually prefer passkeys over passwords, wherever they are offered.
Can someone explain to me what is a passkey?
Imagine a passkey like a secret piece of paper that contains information about username and password, without containing them. (Sounds complicated, don‘t know how else to say it.).
Instead of using passwords, which can be easily hacked, a passkey is unique and cannot be found out easily, not even with the super-duper-mega-whopper-server-PC you have.
So summarised, a secure alternative to passwords.
But how can it be found that only you are trying to access the account? Well, passkeys are protected biometrically.
So unless a) a hacker gets access to your safe Linux computer, finds out the password and uses it and b) gets access by bypassing biometric (very unlikely), you‘re on the safer side.
Thank you George, good explanation! Nobody wants the full deep-down PKI / hash / symmetric key explanation, and nobody wants to memorize the 64-character super-complex password that takes 100 computer years to crack, soooo … Passkeys were created and have had a rocky beginning, but are starting to catch fire. This PCmag article is a reasonable beginner’s guide.
I use a paid service for my password keeper, and over the past couple years, they have expanded their database of sites that support the passkey login, making them very easy to use and supporting more of them than my Yubikeys currently support (25 currently). I still like saving the important ones (e.g., financial, important email accounts, etc.) on my Yubikeys only but due to human nature (in other words laziness) have started parking more of them in both places.
So if anyone knows why itsfoss.community supports passkeys and, evidently, itsfoss.com does not, I’d love to hear the reason. Usually it boils down to an SSO mechanism that uses one of the “big 5” in Technology (MS, Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple) that have global availability, tend to be “closed source”, and, what do you know, are trying to monetize their global availability.
Do I want any of the “big 5” or “big banks” storing my retina/fingerprint/SSH keys/etc.? Not really, but many things in security are tradeoffs between security and convenience, and passkeys fall under that category.
