Ads in the forum? What’s the group consensus?

Think we need to accept the introduction of money génération adverts to allow the site and newsletter to continue. Plus if we all put blockers on so the adverts do not appear or do not generate income for the site the companies will go elsewhere with the needed funds. We accept adverts in newspaper or TV plus many web sites, so this is not unique.

That’s because the underlying technology in use.

itsfoss.com uses Ghost CMS that comes with built-in membership feature. It only supports login links.

itsfoss.community uses Discourse for the forum. They have a wide variety of login option.

Earlier, I had linked both through Ghost login as SSO. They are separate now and you can select your favorite way of logging in to the forum. itsfoss.com remains the same, magic link based log in.

I hope I was able to clarify your doubt.

I’ve disabled the Ublock Origin on this forum. Hope it helps.

You’re 200% right - Pro members don’t see ads, but like Dan Tripp, I use Brave as well, and never saw ads. I like the site enough I chose to support it with a lifetime Pro membership. But yeah, if a person is financially unable to support It’s Foss, a good ad blocker is the way to go. And that ad IS annoying, yikes!!

Hi all,
Even though I’m a pro member, I’d rather continue to see advertising on the forum than know that our forum may not be self-sustaining (yes, ours, because we all use it).

Abhishek,
I still haven’t seen a way to donate to the forum:

  • Is there one?
  • Are you planning to implement it?
  • How can we help?

Regarding passkeys.
If I’m not mistaken, it’s necessary to have at least 2 UbiKeys, which cost around 100€ - 120€ 60.50€, for Security Key NFC, and 121.00€ for YubiKey 5 NFC.
Personally, I prefer not to store “sensitive” passwords, such as bank, credit card, etc., on paper.
Note that this is my opinion, but I fully agree that passkeys are more secure.

Jorge, Yubikey sells keys for half of that amount on its web site. I see no mention of needing more than one.

Hi Bill,

It is highly recommended to always have two keys, one as a spare.

You’re right, and I’ll mention the prices correctly (the official online store according to the country where I live):

2 x Security Key NFC - 85.67€ (including VAT and shipping)
or
2 x YubiKey 5 NFC - 147.17€ (including VAT and shipping)

Both versions are USB A. They are the cheapest ones I can find on the brand’s website.

On Amazon.es, the same keys are cheaper (prices for me):
2 x Security Key NFC - 60.50€ (including VAT)
or
2 x YubiKey 5 NFC - 121.00€ (including VAT)

I have edited my post. Thank you for the correction.

I cant believe they charge for this rubbish.
I could, if I wanted, make my own usb dongle , simply by putting some secure information on a usb drive.
It would be a simple matter to make any activities requiring security access the dongle before proceeding.

Proton is adding services very quickly. I’m looking hard at 2FA, authorizations, and passkeys. Somewhere in there I can probably find an improvement on Yubikeys. Proton already has a pretty bulletproof email, a cloud drive, and a VPN service.

" Seek and you shall find"

You are very progressive, Bill. We all should follow Bill’s example and not be left behind by advancing technology.
A small proportion of new things are actually better, but they are hidden in a mountain of over-complex junk and marketing hype.

I have trained myself to ignore ads anywhere I find them. I am sick and tired of being marketed to death. They are an intrusion upon my privacy. I use ad blockers wherever I can. I don’t often watch live TV but turn on the mute and read while the silly ads are playing. Most of them are kindergarten levels and beyond stupid. The ads on this site haven’t bugged me. Ads have never been the same since they broke the Marlboro Man mold.

Yes I can live with ads by turning my attention off.
How do you get on with junk email?

Well, just put that USB key in a microwave, and see if it survives. That is one strong selling point for the Yubikey. I know there are USB drives that have fingerprint recognition, but another great selling point is you can prove physical access to unlock the Yubikey. So, the three pillars of secure access are:

  • Something you have (the Yubikey device)
  • Something you know (the PUK or unlock code, 6 or more digits)
  • Something you are (proving ownership by providing the PUK and then touching the sensor)

Pretty good trick to pull off (i.e., accessing the private keys from remote); when malware is placed on a device, it still can’t access the data on the Yubikey without those three data points.

I bought two several years ago (NFC 5) when they were around half the price others have mentioned.

Yeah, OK,
If you want sophisticated protection it sounds useful.
I prefer simple things that I might be able to cope with in old age.

I prefer not to train myself to ignore ads. They might be particularly acceptable if they fit into the context and are not flashy in any way. But in general I’m blocking everything away.

I have only 2 email accounts. Not that much mail. One account filters out most of the junk and the other I get no junk mail. That one is Proton.

OK, I have some more, but nowadays the mail providers do a damn good job.

Trouble is if we ignore or block, they dont get a sale so take the funds elswhere….

Not that I want a keyboard, more than enough in stock.

I understand, of course. But they won’t get any sale, at least not from me. Never buy from spammers!
