AI back in the day

Mainframes were originally batch processing only.
Interactive access was a later addon… and it was an addon … interactive commands were different to batch commands.

One of the pleasant surprises of Unix was that commands were the same in foreground and background. We take that for granted today.

I remember the “good old days of remote job entry” at 4800bps.

My first job was COBOL on IBM 4341 for DOS-VSE and 4381 for OS. We wrote insurance software. Some CICS too.
