I was due to get NBN Fibre last week - Thursday - zero-cost to upgrade from copper VDSL 50/25 (and lucky to get 35/7) mbit/s to 500/50 mbits (the “/” separates download/upload speeds)…
It’s annoying that fibre should be limited on upload - engineering wise - it should be 100% asynchronous - so they’re probably actually running some bandwidth throttling to shape it down to 50 mbit/s… Oh well - that would be better than the 7 mbit/s I’m getting now…
Anyway - the NBN techs couldn’t (or “wouldn’t”) do it 'cause of an anomaly over the street / house number, and what it says in the Telstra box thingie… So my ISP has to wrangle with NBN, Telstra and get this sorted and get the ball rolling again…
So - been thinking about setting up a VPN to allow specific people (preferably user / password protected) access to my self-hosted streaming server : Jellyfin…
Just started putting music on there today… it’s a slow process because JellyFin is REALLY SHYTE at indexing my music library (folders on my NAS shared via NFS - $ArtistYYYY-AlbumName/ ) so I’m doing it manually - which is a tad safer anyway - using symlinks…
And it seems okay… Starting making a playlist - I like that feature… And I’d like to be able to access my music library from outside, e.g. on my phone when I’m away from home, e.g. out cycling… and thinking about it - 7 mbit/s should be okay to VPN and play audio streams surely? Not interested on watching TV shows or movies on my sh!tty handset screen…
So - seems “tailscale” looks easy - I’d probably run it on the same server running JellyFin…
