Anyone ever jailbreak a Kindle for KOReader? Thoughts?

I got a free Kindle recently. It’s a KT6 with v5.18.6 firmware. I quite fancied the idea of using KOReader, but unfortunately neither of the well-known jailbreak methods work on this device/firmware combo.

But I’m curious; has anyone installed KOReader on a Kindle? What was your experience like? Any perks aside from the adbreak?

Trying to decide if it’s worth nabbing an older Kindle to play with.

Cheers!

This seems to say that it is a relatively easy task.

Yeah, I think if I had either the firmware version below or a non-MTP device, it would be super easy. Like good ol’ JailbreakMe 3.0.

My issue seems to be MTP KT6s on v5.18.6 aren’t compatible with winterbreak or nosebleed. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a public jailbreak for my particular model/firmware combo. This device is MTP rather than mass-storage USB, which seems to blooter a lot of the relied upon exploits. And then it came preloaded with v5.18.6, and I can’t see a way to rollback firmware on a stock kindle that wasn’t already jailbroke.

(sidenote: what is the past tense of jailbreak? Is there a consensus?)

My intuition says “jailbroke”

What is jailbreak? What is KOReader? My kindle is 12 years old and works great.

Mine too, though I did briefly toy with ‘jailbroken’ before I posted.

Jailbreaking is essentially just bypassing the restrictions set by the manufacturer to install custom software. KOReader is a FOSS document viewer for e-ink ereaders. I’d generally rather run FOSS software on my devices, plus there’s a lot of interesting extensions and customisations available for a jailbroke Kindle.

Thanks. My old Kindle keyboard will do fine until it expires without modification.
