Anyone try out Thunderbird 128 'Nebula' yet?

Haven’t noticed any difference yet. But then, I miss a lot of things. For example, did I miss the exit of Akito? Or did he just disappear?

I’ll try and install Thunderbird Nebula on MX and see what happens.

I downloaded the tar.bz2 file for Thunderbird Nebula and extracted it to the Home folder. The executable called Thunderbird started the program. It seems to work like earlier versions. The only difference is that I can never figure out how to integrate it into the menu, but I was able to put a link on the desktop, so it’s easy to find. Am I missing anything??

Yup, think you missed Lazslo’s previous post.

Was transitioning to LMDE as you posted.

Have since re-installed TB Nebula with Flatpak available.

Made sure not to have extensions installed.

Same two email accounts.

Same 8 seconds to close.

It has to be flatpak causing this.
I searched . There are lots of reports of delays with flatpak starting up, but nothing on exiting.
Maybe you ought to post this to a flatpak discussion group.

Good idea.

(Wonder how MX users are doing with it?)

I use Thunderbird in MX, but not a flatpak.
No problems there

I have used Thunderbird 115 in both LM & MX. Currently, am using Betterbird in MX, a fork of Thunderbird. Flatpak was the only available option for v. 128. I prefer to use the packages, but even when SuperNova 115 arrived, I downloaded it from thunderbird.net so I could try it out.

I have always wished Thunderbird would have a mobile version, but the K9 mail did not work with protonmail accounts. From reading the blog, it looks like the decision to go with Rust included a future mobile version of Thunderbird.

We’ve devoted significant development time integrating Rust — a modern programming language originally created by Mozilla Research — into Thunderbird. Even though this is a seemingly invisible change, it is a major leap forward because it enhances our code quality and performance. This overhaul will allow us to share features between the desktop and future mobile versions of Thunderbird, and speed up our development process. It’s a win for our developers and a win for you.

I downloaded the .tar.bz2 file and will see how it works on my MX laptop.

I had no issues extracting and starting the new Thunderbird. Added one account and tweaked the view options and it did look nicer in the cards view.

I did have some display issues, though. Once I added a theme, the mail tab used dark mode and the folder pane was difficult to read due to that. New tabs like settings were all in light mode.

I went to the hamburger menu in the upper right to see if there was some setting causing this, and most of the menu items had disappeared. Mind you, they were still there, as clicking on a blank area brought up add account box.

It also closed and reopened immediately. Like @nevj said, it must be related to Flatpak.

I will wait till they have the bugs worked out before installing.

On another (also powerful machine) I had Ubuntu running, and it suddenly decided that I needed to run Thunderbird as a snap. Since that happened, it was slow as dirt. Responded slowly when clicking, etc… So I manually set up the Mozilla PPA, set the priority of the PPA higher, purged the PPAs for Firefox and Thunderbird and reinstalled them from the PPA. Things are good again.

I really dont grasp why snap had to be so complicated.
If you want a binary with all the dependencies included, all you need to do is compile a static binary.
Why did Ubuntu not do that?

Have since installed Evolution (non-snap) via Discover in KDE Neon and it is snappy as can be in more than one way!

If you continue to be happy with your setup with Thunderbird, then i’ll have to look up on how to set up Mozilla PPA and set its priority as you said “higher”.

To be honest…

Latest KDE Neon iterations were crashing on me all the time…

After a brief sting with Spiral Cinnamon (which is quite good), decided to try Mint Cinnamon, LMDE version and man! am i ever a happy camper! Not a single crash in over three days!

Still… admit not following up on @Jurgen 's tip about Thunderbird.
Sorry!

Simply find Evolution to be so snappy!
And with the right theme, can switch it to dark mode.

Never thought Cinnamon would be my default goto.

I use it everyday as I have my own server and own private email service which I use for my business and personal purpose and I have 6 (six) email accounts which I use daily. I use Thunderbird for a long time and recently it has been updated to Nebula and I use it in two different OS, Windows 10 (for now) and Fedora40 Workstation which I use as my primary OS and there is no lag in either OS. It opens and closes within seconds. One thing you can do, export your accounts, settings, mails from the present Thunderbird. Then uninstall it COMPLETELY. Remove every single file, folder (hidden also) of Thunderbird from your system and then download Nebula and install it and then import your exported file and then see. Please let us know what happens.

You should use the repository or download from their website and install it. I saw many Flatpack versions are old and some gives problem. I always rely on my Fedora repository. I use Flatpack versions when the app is not available in the repository and I use KDE PLASMA 6. It’s beautiful. Try to use Fedora40 Workstation and KDE Plasma 6 DE. You will never regret it, I think. At least, I don’t. :slightly_smiling_face:

See KDE Neon 6.2 is on the way officially for Oct. 2024.

Will give it a last shot… 'n see about installing Nebula.

Have installed Nebula as Flatpak on KDE Neon 6.1.4

Same issues.

Initially gave it all the time to download GMail, rebooted and in both instances, close almost instantly.

Then on third and fourth reboot, took 7 or 8 seconds to shutdown.

On a side note.
Dropbox never startups on reboot even if set to do that (in Stacer too).
Apparently an issue to be resolved in KDE Neon 6.2

Have switched to Snap version and it takes forever to download messages.

Think the fact that i ask it to remove deleted messages on exit, doesn’t help.

But, Snap version takes only a few seconds to exit compared to Flatpak.
At least, thus far (no reboots yet).

As I have mentioned earlier in my posts that you should use the default repository of the distro you use. But when uninstalling Thunderbird, YOU MUST REMOVE ALL THE FILES AND FOLDERS, INCLUDING HIDDEN, RELATED TO THUNDERBIRD. Then check the version of Thunderbird from repository with the current version from Mozilla website. If that matches, then install Thunderbird from the repository, NOT THE FLATPACK VERSION. If it doesn’t match, then download Thunderbird from the site or follow the instruction there to install it. After that, your problem should be solved because I am using Fedora and installed Thunderbird from the repository and it is working beautifully. If that doesn’t solve your problem, then try Fedora instead of Mint. Fedora has the most updated vesion of everything and update regularly, 2 to 3 updates per week and a major update after every 6 months. So it supports all the current softwares. Try it and please let us know.
Note: There are many ways to beautify Fedora. If you install it, then we will discuss it in separate thread.
