Yesterday I got really frustrated trying to find some information on a web site, google search no problem, link to the site, no problem, set up my user name and password no problem, then it wanted to know where I lived, so it could find my local service… thats where the problems came, I did not want to give it so closed the box, not relevant to my research, it would not go away, ok ignore it and continue.
Then it started to ask
Can I help you
This is a chat bot tell me your question
Do you want this
Would you like more details on that
Bloody thing was following me around the screen, would not close down, would not allow me to ignore it, finally i asked the question… I am sorry I dont understand was the reply, did you mean …
Those of you dragged up through different versions of office, word excel will remember clipit, the paperclip thing that followed you around the screen and could be changed to a lightbulb or other such things… are you trying to write a letter, can I help you … most users switched it off and its now gone to the ribbon bar in the sky.
So question
Like artificial intelligence?
Do you use it ?
Are you involved with its development ?
Ok I know google bing et al use a form to give you search results that I can mange but I only wanted to know if the shop was open and if they had inner tubes for my small trailer, in the end just went in the shop and asked the girl on reception, sadly she did not follow me, or ask for my phone number, or suggest a romantic dinner for 2 … such is real life !
I use ChatGPT very infrequently, to get info on difficult issues that I can not
resolve with google searches. I prefer google… it gives a range of opinions…
GPT tries to be authoritative
I think google knows too much about me as does youtube, you do one research to look at one thing then it just shows you so much.
I booked a holiday with a hotel chain last week, now every you tube video starts with publicity from that chain… too late already booked
There are other search engines. … but apart from ddg I think they all track you.
Would anyone like to develop a FOSS search engine that only finds free software links.
I could use that.
Yes! It can very frustrating at times. The search throws up all kinds of info except what you were looking for. I get my best results from google searches, but sometimes it like pulling teeth.
Last night we had a conference in our village about artificiel intelligence. Our speaker gave a brief history then went on to its use in science and technology. Followed by a chess game and GO the Chinese game. His example showed the ChatGPT against the french AI product, the french cheated in its moves and did not follow the rules of chess !
Finally he set a question about families and numbers of brothers and sisters which it got wrong 3 times before working out the answer.
Sadly our speaker could not answer some of my own questions …
Is there a language of programming behind it, when I taught programming we had cobol pascal basic etc … so what does this use
How does it learn and who teaches it, so if I say the world is flat does it know right from wrong in this case. So does its knowledge base grow
Thinking of commercial interest will it start to sell some product over another through paid advertising. So if you use the microsoft version does it recommend word over office because its based on microsoft
Is anyone actually involved in creation or use within our members
My wife plays with it most days but i do question some of her research results
