Only owned one long enough to get it licensed. My wife, the nurse, suggested with THAT voice that I sell it and buy a table saw. She said she’d rather lose me piece by piece than all at once. I proceeded to trim the end off a finger, but she was probably right.
No, my carburetor experience was limited to VW’s and lawnmowers. Going all electric now.
I have Honda ct125 ag bike. … points ignition and a carby. Trouble free so far.
Not so Landrover… endless trouble with points and carby. Left it out in a storm 2 days ago and this morning had to remove distribtor cap and dry it. I am considering an electronic ignition for the Landover.
Dont have … I use a portable circular saw… not nearly as dangerous.
2024 Subaru Solterra. Not quite 10K miles. Wonderful vehicle, fast as lightning: ‘slow down, Bill.’ No significant problems, other than Toyota software (non-intuitive, Apple-centric).
Don’t buy an electric car unless you have recharging capability where you keep the car. Mine is in the driveway of my house. Don’t buy one expecting to take long road trips–the charging infrastructure isn’t there yet. Every thing we need is within a 100 mile radius, so our 200 mile range is just fine.
One of my great pleasures is driving by gas stations.
I charge my car between 2100 and 0700, the time designated by my power company as the lowest-cost time. The evening of 16 March, starting at 2100, my car took on 54.035 kWh at a cost of $10.27 USD. That’s 5.26 cents per kWh, and approximately 20 cents a mile. I’m really happy to drive past and wave at petrol stations and can’t wait until I can swap my ute for an electric one. The new Slate pick up is supposed to be on the market soon. Check it out:
It is a small ute with a canopy conversion. Seems useful.
I would consider an electric tractor, or maybe a ride-on mower.
Battery life is an issue … it seems to be about 10 years… what then?
But what about long distance, cost of buying to start, scrap after 10 years dead battery. In france we are being told in case of accident they scrap rather than try to repair …..
If an EV lasts 10 years, and a petrol vehicle 20 years you have to factor in twice the capital cost as well as fuel and maintenance. I think diesel wins. LPG seems to have disappeared. Hydrogen is the most climate-friendly. Nuclear is feasable… you would buy a lifetime of fuel with the car.
Lithium batteries are not pretty in an accident, particularly if there is water.
We have a 200 year old convict built bridge on our main highway from Sydney to western NSW. It is dangerously close to collapse. Main highway closed for 6 months plus.
When they rebuild it, we lose a fascinating embankment built of hand hewn sandstone blocks. I reckon they should leave it there and divert the highway.
The most economical transport is a bike. The most comfortable is a large fuel guzzler.
I f–ked my Harley up the other day - my whole day got jinxed by two ignorant “cagers” - 70 kmh highway near my place - someone pulls out of a restaurant carpark and I honk at them and rev - and - they don’t stop!!!
FFS!
Then around the corner about 5 km away - in a 50 km/h zone some POS in a Tesla pulls out of a parking bay - and I rev the bike and honk the horn, they falter, but then keep pulling out!
I was so FURIOUS at that last one - I revved the guts out of the bike and then started having issues - i.e. idling and revving erratically! I was heading to a pharmacy to pickup some meds for the missus - but decided that the bike was too erratic and went home instead!
FFS! In both cases, my Harley is LOUD - and it’s BIG - there’s NO WAY you couldn’t have seen me or heard me! FFS!
This is it in 2014 on the middle of the Nullarbor Plain (i.e. in bumf–k miles from civilization) :
How could you not see it? And the headlight is wired on with the ignition (Australia Design Rule since around 1992).
That was Thursday - I haven’t been game to go and try and start the bike again…
I’ve no idea what the issue might be… dirty fuel? clogged throttle body? Air cleaner? One of the throttle cables busted? Fouled spark plug? I’ll take a look / listen next weekend (long weekend for Easter - also my birthday) and if the problem isn’t obvious - I’ll ring a mobile motorcycle mechanic to take a look at it…
Anyway - it’s fuel injected (I’d prefer a carby - but since 2007 [the year of my Harley] ALL Harley’s are fuel injected).
Anyway - I have 3 PEV (Personal Electric Vehicles) - an e-bike (I ride it on Pedal Assist) and two e-scooters… None of them have a range I’d trust beyond 30 km though… The scooters are for quick runs to neighbourhood shops… The e-bike for pleasure rides after work along the river and some bush tracks nearby…
If you want to know what PPDSPEMFOBBT acronym stands for - you’ll have to PM me - it’s a bit explicit
Some weeks we dont use a car, i may go out on my motorcycle instead for shopping. But in summer we do around 3000 km driving down through Spain and Portugal could not imagine in electric car so many stops
