There’s a new browser, an appimage, called Blanc. Any of you smarter people have an opinion?
It says minimal, ad and tracker blocking and no AI.
Their website is a shocker
Maybe you could explain that a bit more
Website isn’t well presented, as it does not tell you what Blanc Browser is actually based on, though digging around, it is actually an Electron based app built around Chromium. Apparently it uses less Ram than Vivaldi or any other Chromium based Browser. Simply because it is Electron built, it relies on Electron to scan when it needs updating and it is using the latest Chromium version.
Now as it is an AppImage, the browser will update itself, does not necessarily need the actual AppImage to be updated all the time, unless the developer adds more stuff to it and would like a fresh AppImage, his choice, or developers own discretion. Would I use it? One question beckons, is it still answering home to Google? If that is the case, then no I would not use it.
I think @clatterfordslim has answered that well.
There is flashy stuff at the top, and annoying popups, and the real info is hidden.
I dont know if being electron based is good or bad?
Does anyone understand electron?
While the Blanc browser is prettier than any other browser–the ivory background is what I’ve been looking for for years–its failure to disclose its true bones and sinews is really suspect. Brave Origin is much less suspect. Thanks, Slim, for your information.
Electron is based on web technologies. HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Arch developers sometimes use Electron and the scripts are hidden away in .local/share/applications.
Discord, Visual Studio Code, GitHub Desktop are all built using Electron. The amount of Ram used can be higher, although Blanc Browser claims it is using less Ram.
OK , so it is a program … not just a set of standards
and it functions like a language … you write code in electron … correct?
but all it does is call a whole heap of web stuff ?
Many modern apps like Claude and ChatGPT use Electron to build their desktop apps because it allows cross-platform support from one codebase. We felt strongly about offering Blanc on Windows, Mac and Linux at launch which is why we chose Electron. Yes, there are some trade-offs but we’ve been pleasantly surprised overall with Electron’s performance with Blanc.
I’m impressed that Anthony Loria, the developer, chose to speak to ItsFossCommunity about his browser. Such candor and willingness to explain is more than welcome in this forum. Welcome, Anthony, and feel free to join in as you like.
Of course Bill! I want to hear directly from the users so we can shape Blanc not just the way I see it, but from what users want most. It started as a passion project, but it seems to have some real legs. I’m excited to develop it further!
I agree the website needs help! LOL. I spend so much time developing the app itself that I can’t get to everything I want to do with the website, but keep sending your feedback to help Blanc improve all around. Thank you so much.
Welcome aboard, @bananify! We’re always happy to meet new people, developers included! I hope we hear from you often, going forward!
