Closing my web site, email redirection

I decided that 18 months ago I would retire and only do little bots of computer stuff that came direct through recommend friends. But my website I left running as I get very little through it and I had paid for the name and space just lazy on my part.

But now its coming up for renewal and although the sum is around 100 euros for 12 months, so no big deal. I am not sure what to do.

Having had the name and space for 15 years the number of places I have given my email address to is a lot. Close my site loose the emails is bottom line. OK clients they can go elsewhere but its things like health, bank, assurance, retirement, government… I imagine a long list. I have no idea who after all this time I have registered the address with.

when you move house you can get your mail redirected but dont know of a email équivalent unless you do, also the email not sure if its not delivered does it return to sender …

Should have been changing it for the last 18 months but just did not think.

You can forward email … that works like a redirect
but
you have to leave the website going to do it .
I think I would just close down and see who complains.

Well, if cost is not a concern you could extend it another year. During that time, you could maybe auto reply with you new email address.
-or-
During that year update your contact to the places / people you know you want to change and catch any that you miss with the emails that come in to your old address.

Why would you use your website email address for personal things?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the reason for it.

My number one rule, in all respects is to have all important/defunct details written on paper.
Also not saved on a pc.

Might seem old school but it’s what I do and it works.

I’m on same situation with my professional email. It’s been up for six years. I don’t continue to pay the web hotel and my domain from this October. I will login to my account and download everything. My emails on that account are on my Thunderbird and will download them too.

I’m not too concerned about the official email accounts because I have another for them but for some online accounts like Itsfoss/Netflix/younameit I usually have used that email or one of my Gmails. So there might be some “I forgot my email” requests ahead of me.

My registrar allows email forwarding if I have not set up mx records. Another choice was Zoho email, very reasonable. I think it was about $30 a year for 3 addresses. I also run the email through a washer.

Transfer it to a cheaper registrar with free email forwarding. I just started transferring my domains to PorkBun. Funny name - serious registrar. Name Cheap wanted $19/yr for renewal. I transfered it to Pork Bun for $11/yr.

Yeah, I keep a book… just for essential personal details. It is a mess but at least it exists outside the digital arena.

I have been in computing and informaticien almost all my life. Some 20 plus years ago, I left the UK to move to France where I set up my own computers business. Now at faire approcahing 70 time to retire and just do the bit of computing I enjoy rather than trying to do do everything. Hence I closed my computer business and did the déclarations with the tax people to stop and clame my french pension. Hence the web site now is out of date and not used to attract clients. Just email is the bit I am interested in keeping contact with the french authorities who contact me by that method, paperless is great but if you close your box its a pain

Thanks, my bad for being confused, should have realised the obvious.

Can’t offer a solution other than go through the pain of switching the most important things.

Personally, I wouldn’t consider forwarding or redirection. Adding a third party to personal stuff doesn’t gel with me.

Sorry to be negative but hope you get things sorted.

I pay less than the quarter of it for a year. Maybe the hosting has different plans, and you could change to a more affordable plan?

I was with titan internet, but the were bought out, by another company, who again were bought out and its now easy space. But the packed they were trying to sell me had a security part so 65 pound for hosting 65 for security both plus tax then plus conversion rate as i pay in euros plus bank charges …

They have just offered to drop the security part and I said NO

They have offered email only now but need to check price and what it consiste of before I decide.

Yes they are expensive.

When i started with titan almost 30 years ago they were great value and I had 30 plus sites hostel with them, each time I set up a new client I always recommended them and started getting discounts, they wanted me to white hat host and have my own server, which at the time was tempting but as I started to cut back and clients stopped its vastly reduced so only my own site is with them, other sites I manage are on OVH and Fatcow.

I concur with Dan. I assume you own the domain of your website. You can usually find the current registrar using whois.com.
I bought my domain through my hosting site which unfortunately means I don’t have a login at the domain registry site. To transfer to the likes of PorkBun I would probably have to contact my hosting company first to take control of my domain. Unless PorkBun would do that for me.

As Dan pointed out PorkBun offers free email forwarding which I imagine means the email goes through their email servers before being forwarded. Therefore I also imagine you would have to pay them for being your domain registrar, which is a lot less than paying for your website hosting that you don’t need any more.

Hopefully, you have a list of all the sites you use your (upcoming) cancelled account with. I’ve nixed a few web sites over the years, but none of them were commercial or important enough to worry about. Geocities, how I miss thee.
