Color not changing in Settings>Appearance>Color

I cannot alter the color despite many reboots/cold starts. I have tried various combinations of dark/light and background images, yet the screen remains orange/purple.
Why do you think this is?

Well I can change the background image on my Debian/Gnome .
You right click on the background and get a menu and one of the items there will do it. It should bring up a window which offers a choice of background images.

Oh, and I programmed on a 360, and a 1620. It was good training. Did you use Fortran, PL/1, JCL?
