Hey can anyone post how to make my Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 be able to use the new Cosmic Desktop? I would prefer a desktop theme to try it out.
Thanks for any help on this.

Maybe wait till Pop!_OS / System76 release Pop!_OS 24.04 for arm64 / aarch64?
I was running Pop!_OS 22.04 quite successfully on an 8 GB Pi4 - was pretty straightforward - download the image file and write it to an SD-Card (I think I was actually booting mine off a USB 3 SSD though).
Be interested to try it myself on my Pi5…
Still no official downloads of 24.04 that I can see - so I guess it’s still in pre-release?
I don’t know if System76 offer “in place” upgrade like Ubuntu’s “do-release-upgrade” or not - I’ve only been using it about 18 months myself…
I believe System76 have an arm64 based laptop on their roadmap - so they’re probably working on / looking at Pop!_OS 24.04 and Cosmic desktop for that RISC platform… I’d imagine this potential hypothetical arm64 device will probably have a lot more grunt than the arm64 in the Pi4 and 5…
Cosmic is currently in Alpha state. So by a long shot not a stable release (though looking very good already). I’m assuming they will first have it running on their main architecture (the one running on their computers), and next up possibly ARM and/or RISC V.
Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye out for it all. Also, I didn’t realize they were going to do an arm64 based laptop, so that’s exciting as well.
I think you misread my comment there… they’ll first focus on intel based architecture (because that’s what they need for their own PC’s). Once that is done, I can imagine them putting some energy into having it run on a RasPi 5 model or one of the emerging Risc V models. I have no idea what’s in the pipeline at System 76.
I first tried Pop! in early 2023 - 22.04 - I downloaded for x86_64 and aarch64 to run on my Pi4 - I reckon they’ll have a release for Pi4 / 5 with 24 (final “Cosmic”) at the same, or very soon after, the release of Pop!_OS 24…
Sorry for reviving this old post, but if you’re mainly keen on the COSMIC desktop, why not give Fedora COSMIC Spin a try? Grab the latest raw image from the official website and flash it to an SD card using Win32DiskImager.
I’ve been running it on my Pi 3 Model B+ — it’s slow as a snail, but it does work. It runs much better on my Pi 4 with 4GB of RAM.
COSMIC desktop looks too locked down for my taste…
I used Pop!_OS when they defaulted to Gnome 4x …
I need Wayland disabled, and there’s things I do on Gnome that I can’t do on Cosmic (e.g. move window control widgets to the left)… i.e. I use Gnome Tweaks…
I recently tried Red Hat 10 - with Gnome - I went to install Gnome Tweaks and it advised me that everything I needed to tweak in Gnome was already there - my arse! Ubuntu 24.04 still make Gnome Tweaks available in the default repos…
I should really give Cosmic (via Pop!_OS 24) a test drive (in qemu / kvm)…
Just did a search - window decorations stuck “hard” to the right - moving them to the left is a requested feature still not implemented.
XFCE comes “out of the box” with the ability to do this - and Gnome 3 and 4 with Tweaks - it’s easily done…
I use two Macs - and I theme my Linux Gnome desktops to look and feel a lot like MacOS…
