Desktop files overwritten/lost during Ubuntu 20.04 LTS reinstallation

In the process of reinstalling Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, files on the Desktop were lost/overwritten. How do I recover these files.

If you did a fresh reinstallation without backup, you’re probably lost.
