Here’s where I compare Windows and the alternatives…
Install Windows (10, 11) from scratch onto some piece of hardware? You’ll be hunting around for drivers for hours… Try one - get forced to reboot… Try another… reboot… Ad Nauseam… My younger brother complained about this on a “Gaming” laptop he bought recently (Asus brand). Note - a few years back I had to wipe a Surface Pro 3 and re-install Windows 10 - this was on MICROSOFT HARDWARE! That was nightmarishly complicated!
Install a recent version of Linux on fairly recent (or less than 10 years old) piece of hardware? 90% of the stuff will just work- not hunting around for drivers - no constant reboot, try something else, reboot. The only time I’ve hit snags with installing Linux was dodgy WiFi and BT support - it sorta worked, but not really (and I can always use ethernet while troubleshooting)?.
MacOS : piece of cake if you’re on Apple hardware - and you’re completely on your own if you’re trying to build a Hackintosh Frankensteins Monster… But then again - would be a PITA if you’re on an Intel Mac older than 5-7 years…
Most USERS don’t experience any of the above because they pay other people to do it for them…
Usability? I LOATHE using Windows… And in many ways - I prefer to use Gnome on Linux over MacOS - but I do like the latter - and at least Apple don’t make BULLSHIT arbitrary decisions to remove “features” like slow-double-click to rename a file in the Finder, or middle-button-paste a string from the clipboard into a terminal (this works in BOTH Apple’s native “Terminal” and third party “iTerm2”) - unlike the Gnome foundation…
Removing middle-button-paste from Gnome because it confuses new users? WTF? It doesn’t upset or confuse Mac users - do they consider Gnome users dumber than Mac users?
