Do you have experience with BeeLink as MiniPC for Linux?

BTW - I would not recommend any RISC V Single Board Computer for a newbie… Linux is just not mainstream enough on that architecture - from what I’ve read…

The RPi ecosystem is ubiquitous and used by primary school children to astronauts (there’s one on the International Space Station)…

I’ve used OrangePi (x2) BananaPi, Pine64 (x2), NextThing C.H.I.P. (x10) - but easily had the best experience with RPi (3B, 4B, 5B, Zero and Zero 2W). The only thing the CHIP had over any others (including Pi) is it had onboard LIPO battery connection and power management…

To all

Really a HUGE thanks for your valuable feedback!!!

@Sheila_Flanagan

Really valuable your feedback

  1. Why did you use AMD Ryzen?

I bought it NIB a couple of years ago from someone who received it as a gift and wanted cash. $225 USD vs $369 on Amazon.

Valuable acquisition!

I have had no heating issues and anything I have put on it works (well except audio took some tweaking in Solus :wink:

Good sign, my main concern is the heat of the SSD and of course of the all hardware itself.

  1. How many hours you use the mini pc by day?

I have the 500GB NVMe for OS & personal file storage, currently running Solus. The 1 TB SSD is my home server NAS storage.

It is confuse, in your table of specs is indicated 500GB but you do mention of 1TB, Is there another mini pc?

I have installed & tested:

Debian 12
Manjaro
Linux Mint
Endeavour
Feren OS
Fedora Server

Excellent!!!

Of course it came with an inactivated copy of Windows 11 and I emailed support to get the license key. From there, I proceeded to install Linux and set everything up.

Good to know that - I am assuming it is Windows 11 Home, right? I have the intention to get the official iso from MS and save the valid key and use VirtualBox in other machine running Linux as Host

I love the small form factor. I had to move my apartment suite in my home to another, smaller bedroom (while remodeling is taking place) and was able to hook this up along with my DVD player to the external monitor with 2 HDMI inputs (on a small table at the foot of my bed) and use it just like my other desktops/laptops, since I did not have room for them when I moved. I can also just shut it down, take it with me and set up in the same manner when my husband and I RV.

  1. Pls, could you take photo of your mini pc with an iron, bottle/box of milk, cereal box? I want have a perfect reference about the size. Thanks in advance
  2. What is the weight of the Mini Pc?

I have played casual games that do not require an iGPU. I have other computers for gaming, so did not care that this did not have it as I bought it primarily to use as network storage device. I even added the OWC Mercury Pro DVD-Writer External and used Brasero & Handbrake for ripping CDs/DVDs without issue.

Thanks for this feedback. I’ve heard about Brasero, but never about HandBrake

There is NO “noise” sound from the Beelink.

Excellent … good to know that

All in all, it is of excellent quality, performance, and without temp issues.

Again, huge thanks for that

Hope this helps!

A lot!

If you have again the opportunity to buy a new Mini PC

  1. Would be BeeLink again your best option? Or Do you have perhaps other preference? and Why?

Huge thanks!!!

@berninghausen

Both machines were stages of the shrinking that have led to your Beelink and the other NUC-type computers.

Could you share pls each model?

The little boxes do everything except play the games that require outrageously big and expensive GPUs.

Agree, gaming always require a lot of hardware to play in peace

The compact size of our little boxes is a real treat when I think of the size and weight of systems 20 years ago,

I have 2 old PC Desktops (tower) … now I can see really the difference

especially with CRT monitors

Yes, a lot of space required

I’m saving up for a Bee or similar so I can get USB 3.0 and USB-C and maybe a couple of M2 drives.

Pls, let know us when you buy your new “toy“

@donkaron

I have a Beelink SER-8 with a Ryzen processor.

  1. Why AMD?

It’s my home server

  1. How many hours does the machine work by day?

I noticed that my electric bill has gone down since switching to the Beelink.

Ah, a very important point about the consumption of energy, thanks for point out that.

@Sheila_Flanagan Could you share some thoughts about this? pls

It draws about 5 watts at idle, versus the 55 watts my old machine idled at

How do you know that?

@daniel.m.tripp

I’d love a “farm” of mini PCs / NUCs (preferably with AMD CPU) I could experiment with ProxMox on… but nearing retirement (missus is retired) I really can’t justify the expenditure…

  1. Why AMD?

Again to all….

Huge thanks! :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs: :clinking_beer_mugs:

It’s probably just my personal preference… I just prefer AMD to Intel and I think you get slightly more bang for your buck with AMD. AMD did 64 bit on x86 before Intel, and had to drag Intel kicking and screaming into 64 bit (Intel wanted everyone to move to “IA64” - but it couldn’t do x86 legacy - and nobody embraced it) world for x86… Quite a few vendors still call x86_64 - like Canonical - “amd” (e.g. ubuntu-24.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso)

I’ve haven’t built an Intel CPU desktop for myself for over 20-25 years… probably 25+ (dual Pentium II 266 in 1998 which got upgraded to dual Celeron 466)… I’ve always gone AMD… I’ve bought intel laptops before and still have a few - but my main Linux laptop is AMD too (ThinkPad E495).

It was mostly Mac users (on PowerPC) who had this sticker / t-shirt / badge :

They must have cringed when Apple switched to Intel :smiley: :smiley: :smiley:

As for electric usage, I do not monitor these things. However, the specs say:

“…typically draws around 35-45 watts when running at full capacity, but during lighter tasks, it can use as little as 10 watts.”

Thanks,
