Easter thoughts 2025

We all have some form of Hope in the future

  • We expect the sun to rise tomorrow
  • We expect Spring to follow Winter
  • We expect our computer to boot again tomorrow
  • We expect the next update of our favourite Linux distro to appear someday

That is part of what Easter is about.

The scientific position is that when things recur regularly it gives us confidence that they will continue to recur in the future

  • The Laws of Chemistry are the same everywhere in the universe and were always the same in the past and hopefully will stay the same in the future
  • The rate of radioactive decay of isotopes is a physical constant. Nuclear reactors would be a hazard if this were not so

There are some things that are eternal. We all Hope that we can be part of that Eternity.

Enjoy your Easter, but give some thought… it is more than an egg hunt.

Easter greetings everyone.

Generally france celebrates on easter monday with a holiday where the uk was good friday, in my region although its not a holiday on the friday they organise a procession through the centre of Perpignan the Procession de la Sanch, strange customs in different areas.

Because Easter is tied to the lunar calendar. It is the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is an approximation to the March equinox.

The Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar.. Western churches use the Gregorian calendar.

It is a celebration. You need something to celebrate with.

Australia is strong on holidays… we have Friday and Monday as public holidays. It is also usually close to our Anzac day (25th April) which is also a public holiday. Some people take the whole week off.

The solstices and equinoxes are reasons to celebrate. Human-centered holidays are just artificial overlays on the natural events.

All human activity, and thought, is an overlay on natural events. Nature came first, we are just a plugin or an addon.
except
Humans add something that is not found anywhere else in the natural world. What is this mysterious thing that we add? You tell me.

a very happy, peaceful and above all: healthy, Easter to all of you. :revolving_hearts:
I hope you´re doing well.

And let´s not forget our families. All the best to them as well.
Often enough they provide strength and comfort to us.

Many greetings from Rosika :slightly_smiling_face:

It has always been fear, Neville.

That is a strange answer, Bill.
I do believe animals encounter fear… or did you mean existential fear.

I was expecting something like this

" Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom."

Cant remember where it came from

One of the things that distinguishes humans is art. Even cave men made drawings, but I do not believe animals draw.

Reality keeps convincing me that religious practice is a result of fear of the unknown. Additionally, those who invent the religion are more than likely manipulating fear to enrich themselves.

OK, you meant existential fear.
Lets Hope there is something in that ‘unknown’ to be afraid of.

I think the ‘practice’ side of religion is people preferring a regimented existence. It is what we think/believe that distinguishes religious people.
