Encryption, or getting locked out of your own house without the key

Encryption of stored data hasn’t been discussed recently, but presently it seems to be a fairly big topic concerning Windows.

My nearly-new Win 11 machine just launched bitlocker without warning and without first providing the recovery key. I got out of that in the end at the expense of a lot of wear on the disks. It seems clear from looking around the web that a lot of people are in difficulty; you can imagine someone not seriously computer-savvy losing their medical or financial records.*

None of the websites I looked at proposed a sure-fire way of permanently preventing bitlocker (or the “family” version) being activated by an update, or simply by adding some hardware.

It’s difficult to attribute this situation to a simple and inadvertent lack of common sense or consideration for users, but I’d better not try to comment further - except to say that there would be a huge row if ever Ubuntu were to do something like that.

*We’re all aware in the local free repair shop that not everyone knows about doing a backup each evening; anyway, that isn’t obvious if all you’ve got in the house is the laptop on your lap.

This is a mechanism of Microsoft to lock people into Windows 11. When they told the world about this, they told encryption would be good to protect your data, just in case your device were stolen or got hacked.

The reality is that they want to make it as difficult as possible to migrate to other OS’.

Perhaps some lawyers need to get on this?

A while ago they also started exporting all documents on a device to onedrive “for safe keeping” and your drive would just have a link to the onedrive version. Another mechanism of vendor lock-in.

There are so many instances where Microsoft could be reasonably taken to antitrust court for anticompetitive behavior. I’m not sure if Bitlocker will work in court since full-disk encryption is an industry standard at this point (save for the horrid manner that MS implements it). To me, the greatest argument for remanding Microsoft to an antitrust court in 2026 would be its constant forcing of Edge as your default browser, which has changed and alternated after updates so many times, you have to fight your computer on occasion to use your preferred browser. Ironically, Microsoft has been taken to court in the late 90s over this issue, back it was Internet Explorer locking out Netscape. Interestingly, the EU passed the Digital Markets Act to ban Microsoft from hardening of Edge as a default browser and/or search (compelling MS to allow European consumers to easily pick their default browser without the onerous frictions it has introduced to American users of W11 trying to opt-out of Edge).

I would love to see something similar happen to Microsoft in the U.S. I am not holding my breath it will happen, though.

I don’t like bitlocker either. It was awhile ago, but I believe I was able to find my key at my MS account site on the web.

I also turn off Bitlocker on the PC.

I don’t use bitlocker or encryption on my Windows or Linux boxes. At least not on purpose.

Microsoft antitrust? Apple even more so. Google too.

I’d like to see more up with Linux and less down with Microsoft. I’m not pointing at anyone in particular. It’s just super common to rip into Microsoft. If you don’t like them, don’t use them. I’ve chosen to do that with Apple. Everyone has their brand bias.

I’m thinking of users (the majority I’m sure) who don’t know much about the technology but who, nevertheless have the right to use their computers without hindrance or hidden traps.

We are relatively more interested here in PC operating systems but, particularly in present circumstances, Android (though it’s attractive and useful for many of us) worries me most regarding monopolies that depend on the lack of data protection worldwide.

I did too, but the procedure was very much a mess, with the fear of losing my disks because of a misplaced click. But I’m thinking of the majority who will find their computer dead and at best will be advised to pay for a new disk and installation. All this fits with the present World order, where one slogan could be: “If you’re not a geek you’re a nobody”.

The world has always been like that. For many centuries it was the gap between literates and illiterates. Then when most people learnt to read and write it was the gap between numerates and innumerates. Now it is the gap between digitally capable and non digitally capable.
There will be something else that divides us in the future.

It is the moral responsibility of those who cope, to assist those who struggle. That includes things like aged care, education, disability issues, health care, and the digital divide.

Forced encryption behind your back is not caring.

I agree with “be positive”, but there is a place for genuine critique provided it is done in a non-vindictive manner.

I am sorry to disagree, but this just does not happen. Software does not on it’s own decides to encrypt a file or a disk by itself. Windows or Linux.

One would hope not.
I did have one case in Mint where Timeshift started without my permission, found an empty partition, and started writing backups on it.

That sounds strange in itself. And it is hard to believe since I have been using Mint since 2018. But coming from an very experienced Linux user, I would have to say I would have to except your experience. There should be a logical explanation, but I do not know one.

I agree completely. That way there are no surprises. The auto encrypt of the Windows root ("c:) drive is something I never hear of nor experience. I have used Windows from all the way back to Win 3.1 (?) to Win 11. I converted to Linux some 7 years ago, so my exposure to Win 11 is limited.

Logging is is the easy bit. Getting your encrypted data back is more difficult, and impossible if they haven’t made the key accessible to non-geeks, and with precise and straightforward instructions for using it. Of course the crime is interfering with private data in a way that carries the risk of effectively deleting it.

Windows AND “features” of what we still call the BIOS required by M$ for Windows 11. If I read correctly the current BIOS can react by launching encryption if, for example you install a disk or other device.

The PC was introduced nearly half a century ago. It is time to ban the manufacture of PCs of which an enterprise is allowed to own the firmware. While we’re at it, ban the bricking of any device (tablet…) at a date chosen by the manufacturer or any other external entity.

I run a free computer clinic at the senior center in a small town in Wyoming and we see a lot of older Windows machines as well as some win 11 machines. We’ve had several people bitten by bit locker. One thing to note is if the machine was set up without a Microsoft account, which a lot of our customers want and we suggest. In that case Microsoft doesn’t have the bit locker code. If we set up the computer we will check for bit locker and turn it off before they use it.

The other problem we run into is one drive or whatever they are calling it today. They also get confused in file explorer as to where things art thee is the real location then there is the resents location and then there is the cloud location. If there machine can’t be upgraded then we will sit with them on a Linux computer running Mint and go through what they do on their machine and show them that they can do everything they are used to doing.

That is a big pain in the ass, i failed totally with one client to get back in to a new machine, she ended up back at the shop where she bought it and they just replaced it asvthey had a batch sold that all went wrong
