Gentoo Running On My Acer Mini PC

My latest Gentoo update produced strange errors about being unable to compile gcc , and refused to proceed.
After some searching I found that the root filesystem was full.
I have 80GB for /. Some searching revealed that the directory /var/cache/distfiles used 35GB.
The Gentoo docs said I could either delete all files in /var/cache/distfiles, or use eclean to selectively remove some.
I did not have eclean installed, and there was no space to install it, so I deleted the lot.
On a subsequent update, portage replaced some files in /var/cache/distfiles… about 45 files using about 2 GB.
and
the update worked .

So what is this eclean command , and when should I run it… obviously I have been neglecting some cleanup requirements. I do use emerge --depclean, but that does not seem to do what is needed?

All done and fixed! (Finally.) Starting with blfs.

I do not use eclean but try running “ emerge –update –deep –newuse @world “ after you run “ emerge-webrsync and emerge –sync “ this may pick-up a few packages for “ emerge -a –depclean “ .

Are you using chroot for blfs?

No, using the LFS final system, or trying to.

Are you making any progress?

No. NetworkManager installed, still not. revoot, ip a: still not.

If you wait for “wifi” you will never get anywhere with BLFS!!!

I do not know how your host is setup, but you have maybe two options!!!

#1 (The best) Use the host and chroot into LFS, you would have internet and copy and paste!!! Download and compile and install “wget and openssh”

#2 (If possible) Use a ethernet cable, and you would then log into a “ftp server” and download and install “wget and openssh”

#3 After openssh is up and running, and you have access to another PC, you can then ssh to the LFS machine!!! Which is what I do with my W11 machine!!!

Get rid of NetworkManager and any other special network software.
Do it by hand like this

Problems with wifi come from using complicated software that makes unwanted assumptions.
I have not tried LFS but it should be no different from any linux when it comes to setting up wifi.

Then why not try LFS and teach us all how it should be done!!!

You will get me into LFS one day. Not sure I could teach anyone anything.
Wifi suffers from well meaning individuals writing packages to ‘simplify’ it, but they end up complicating it.

I just spent 8 months fixing the fuel injector pump on our tractor. … then the starter motor failed. I finally got it started yesterday. There are fuel leaks to trace.

If it only leaks while running, the leak must be on the high pressure side of the pump? Correct?

I would think so!!! I have been building connection between the house and the shop and at my age, nothing is ever easy!!!

Forget LFS, it is not really worth the effort!!!

Even if @George1 has wifi internet or ethernet cable, unless he wants to manually type the commands for BLFS, then a better way can be found!!!

Well found the problem. On startup, a job to start the card and mount it starts, but it gets interrupted due to the time limit.

OK, but how about the learning effect?

You mean learning how to copy and paste!!!

Then use a ethernet cable!!!

No, I meant it seriously.

Sorry, my fault!!! LFS is never meant to be a daily drver, it is and still is meant to be a learning too!!

If one wishes to learn just how a distro is put together, then LFS will do just that!! For someone like you, that is using Gentoo, then the interest in LFS would be normal, Gentoo is LFS, only with a package manager!!!

I have Gentoo and LFS booting on my Acer Mini!!! I sometimes I use Gentoo as the host, using chroot, and, W11 using ssh, to build LFS, which is in the BLFS stage!!! It is a slow process, and takes a lot of time and sometimes one will succeed with a LFS that works!!!

You have everything you need, with Gentoo, so create a partition for LFS and give it a try!!!
