I learned something new today having my first graphics problem on Mint, so would like to share. Its not a question more of a learning experiance.
Over the years I have no idea just how many Linux mint installs I have done but over 300 at last count. I have never had any trouble with graphics cards or compatible, just install Mint, put on a few extra software tools (vlc, chrome etc) and away you go.
About 6 months back did a upgrade from Linux mint think it was 19 mate to LMDE 6 for a client as he could not do a standard update, mixed it with a general system clean remove the cover a get rid of dust, dog hair etc.
Everything worked fine, he did the updates every week, but about a month back said I have little red boxes on my screen (too much red wine thought I), last week he reminded me of the problem thinking it was a facebook issue, no rush. But this morning he said local paper does the same, and youtube.
Bit more serious, suggested use firefox if its chrome causing the error but that was doing the same thing.
So dropped in thinking its the graphics card, no that was fine, moved on to multimédia issue, everything up to date, thought about screen résolution, again fine, looked at the graphics drivers again no issue.
Installed opera browser and that showed the same.
after looking around came across an item about graphics exceleration issues. Switched that off everything running and displaying as it should, problem solved. Untill the next time !
so in chrome or firefox, top right corner, three lines or dots, into preferences, system switch off graphic acceleration and no more red boxes.
lesson learned.
