Grub2 is not picking up Windows-10 boot drive but EFI is

Using grub2 on an Ubuntu 22.04 dual boot system. System has 4 drives: a SSD + HDD for Ubuntu Linux and a SSD + HDD for Windows. I can boot into Linux and it reads grub and my 40_custom file.

I want to be able to boot into Windows from my grub menu.

Actual behaviour

grub file

If you change this file, run ‘update-grub’ afterwards to update

/boot/grub/grub.cfg.

Uncomment to enable BadRAM filtering, modify to suit your needs

This works with Linux (no patch required) and with any kernel that obtains

the memory map information from GRUB (GNU Mach, kernel of FreeBSD …)

#GRUB_BADRAM=“0x01234567,0xfefefefe,0x89abcdef,0xefefefef”

note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE

you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo’

#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

Uncomment if you don’t want GRUB to pass “root=UUID=xxx” parameter to Linux

#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries

#GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY=“true”

Uncomment to get a beep at grub start

This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the

I don’t have the printout here but I can say that the Windows boot SSD is

The grub menu reported hd0, gpt 1 fat efi It is also my WD 1 TB SSD which I know is the Windows boot drive.

Hi @Gallienus ,
Welcome.
First can I give you a tip.
When you copy info into a discourse post, enclose it in
```
that’s right triple backquote… put
```
on a separate line before the info, and another on a line after the info
It will come out like this

GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

in a shaded box

Now , that statement in the shaded box above, I think, needs to be added to the file /etc/default/grub
Just use a text editor and insert that line at the end of the file… you will need sudo to get permission.

Then test it … type the command , in Ubuntu
os-prober
it should find Ubuntu and Windows.

If it finds them , type the command, in Ubuntu… you need sudo
update-grub
Then reboot, and you should get both Ubuntu and Windows in the grub menu.

I am assuming that you did install grub , when you installed Ubuntu. If not you need to install grub first . Do it from Ubuntu… Yes, I reread your post… you have grub installed … ignore this line.

Regards
Neville

Hi Neville,

Thanks. I’d like to edit my post and fix the formatting but can’t do that here. Note that my grub does contain the line:

GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

I typed sudo os-prober but it returned no response.
I do type “sudo update-grub” after my edits of grub and 40_custom
The problem is with ‘/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi’ not found.

It looks like you need to install os-prober
apt install os-prober
Then try again typing os-prober
That has to work before update-grub will find your Windows because grub2 uses os-prober to find every OS except your Ubuntu.

You will not need a 40-custom if you can get os-prober to work

The problem is with ‘/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi’ not found

I dont know what to do about that? Do you have an EFI system file on both disks?
If so it might be looking in the wrong one.
Also do you have the EFI system file mounted to /boot/efi in Ubuntu? It will not find it if it is not mounted. When you mount it, have a look inside and see if that file is present.
To make it be mounted when you boot, put an entry in /etc/fstab
Be careful editing /etc/fstab if you make a mistake it can prevent you from booting.

You could not edit because that was your first post. You should be able to edit replies in future.
