Handbrake on new Mint Install

I’m running a fresh install of Mint 20. I installed Handbrake (from the software manager). I installed the codecs during the install and installed the ubuntu restricted extras, but Handbrake will not rip dvd’s (first half of the movie looks fine, second half is pixelated.

did you try ripping the same dvd more than once and did you try multiple dvd’s?

I tried the same DVD multiple times (The Man with the Golden Gun). I was able to rip a DVD of Arsenic and Old Lace, but not the Last Jedi. So, it seems to be Handbrake’s inability to decode the DVD, not the program’s central function.

i used to have a similar issue with handbrake with some dvd’s (but haven’t in quite some time) and my workaround was to try makemkv on the ones handbrake couldn’t get into. out of curiosity, do you have libdvdcss2/libdvd-pkg (or some version of that depending on your distro) installed?

yes to both packages (libdvdcss2 and libdvd-pkg)

I tried makemkv on the same troublesome dvd and it also failed.

i used to install from the ppa and never had any issues with it. i don’t know what version mint is offering, but the ppa has 1.3.3.1:
