For the french 8th may and 11th November to mark the 2 wars.

It was a worrying day for Australians
We woke up to a landslide election win for the reigning party, and a dramatic collapse for the main opposition party.

Better not get into politics after the last week in the UK with reform party, canada election result… austrailia … le pen in france, right or wrong, positive or not, selection of the people or in many cases apathy not bothering to vote.

I lost my vote on leaving the uk but also lost interest

… and with you!

… and is the reigning party conservative or liberal. Even more importantly, is this result as devastating as the recent Presidential Election here in the U.S.A.? I hope not, because what our new President is doing could be disastrous for the world economy as well as American freedom as we have known it for over 200 years . . .

Neither.
In Australia, as you know, everything is upside down.
Our conservative party is called Liberal Party and is equivalent of the Replublicans.
They are not the reigning party.
Our reigning party is called Labor Party and is equivalent of your Democrats.

We cant go into politics here.

I agree, and I’m not politically oriented. For me politics amounts to the old saying “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”, meaning that if I have certain rights, so does everyone else. As I sit, and watch events proceed, I’m increasingly concerned about the direction my nation’s headed in.

In my reply, I was simply attempting to get a sense of how the reigning party may be thinking in Australia. Here, the currently reigning party (Republicans/conservatives) seem to reject scientific research in favor of hear-say, or whatever the conservative leadership is telling them at any given moment, and facts are regarded as fake-news while opinions are treated as facts. I simply wondered if the same holds true in Australia. I’m a bit relieved that my concerns don’t appear to extend to your country yet (at least I hope not).

We seem to be OK on that. Our current governmant has echoed concerns about the international rule of law, and about countries invading other countries and it has voted accordingly at the UN.
We dont have a presidential system. Our prime minister has far less individual power… things have to go through parliament. I think that is a measure of protection against extremism.

Several years ago at a census, one of the questions was about religion, with an open option if you did not pick one of the main ones, many voted klingon (star trek). The question failed to return on the next census.

Can we have a linux party ?
No too many versions, bit like french politics where one year, when I could vote, there were 29 different political party candidates. I was so tempted to vote animal party, but the candidate was a bit of a dog.

We only need to mention money now and we have hit all the no no no conversations !

I envy you for that. I used to believe that our governmental organization provided those protections as well, but currently, our U.S. Supreme Court is predominantly conservative, and our Congress (Representatives and Senators) is ruled by conservatives, and finally, our President is a conservative (Republican) party member. Our conservative party appears to be marching in lock-step with our President, and that’s what has me so concerned about the current situation.
