There is an article on distrobox in the September issue of Linux Magazine.
Its website is
It is a set of CLI commands for running things in containers…all sorts of things… even whole distros.
It looks to be very easy to use compared to docker
It could compete with VM’s such as Gnome Boxes
It is mooted as an alternative to snap and flatpak because it is supposed to be more efficient. If that takes off, it may change the desktop scene dramatically.
The website has good documentation.
I would be interested if anyone has tried it or is interested to try.?
I tried it because I saw a video on YT which was a tutorial of installing DaVinci Resolve on any linux distro…and in that video the youtuber instructed to use Distrobox for creating a fedora box and then installing davinci on the fedora to use it cuz acc to the ytber Fedora runs very stable on fedora.
I tried it 3 times but it didn’t work though ( the installation of fedora box worked but resolve wouldnt install due to driver issues as i was not able to install drivers on the box due to many many errors in it…
I think that was a rather complicated first try.
It is early days for distrobox… i might try a few simpler things… perhaps things I have already done with docker.
Distrobox seems to be not much more than a user friendly wrapper for docker, perhaps with some extra intelligence. I may be underestimating it?
You can put a whole distro in docker, but it was not intended for that, it was meant for containerizing single applications in their own environment.
