Hi Neville,
Yesterday, after reading your post, I tried out Bottles because I have a program I want to use that only runs on Windows and Mac.
The program is an interface for a mini guitar amplifier, where you can configure the amplifier via USB or using an Android app.
After several tests, so far, I haven’t encountered any issues with it running on Bottles.

From what I read, the goal of the Bottles project is to make Wine easy to use and more reliable. It is a wrapper around Wine that does all the difficult setup and configuring work.

So Wine versus Wine with a better UI.

But we already have play on linux that does just that.

I used wine a lot a few years back, now dont really need it, and never had issues just open the app with wine and it worked

What is that? Noone mentions it .
I think the merit of bottles is that it gets the wine config right for you.
I dont care 
 I never use Win apps. Never learnt Excel or Powerpoint. Use gnumeric when I have to tackle a spreadsheet.
R and Julia and Python have dataframes 
 they are way better than spreadsheets

No - I’m pretty sure CrossOver is geared more to productivity apps like Office Suites
 But good luck trying to get Adobe Photoshop or the latest Word 365 (winword.exe) running in it
 I know there are actual graphic designers who need and use nearly all of the features that Adobe offer in their “Creative Suite” - but most morons who swear they “>>>NEED<<<” Photoshop - could just as well be served using Paint Shop Pro - or GIMP
 All they’re doing is half-arsed edits of photos they’ve ripped from PInterest to create shitty online memes


I’ve never used Bottles - so I can’t comment there (I think I installed it once but never used it)


I think “PlayOnLinux” wants to do both - i.e. apps and games


Lutris and Steamplay are almost 100% geared towards games
 But I seem to remember SteamPlay will let you (or attempt to enable) a Windows only application (Steam do offer applications, like Game Developer Engines like Unity, and even Blender) if it’s in your Steam library


I seem to remember Steam hosted a neat looking 3D “sculpting” app from AutoDesk - “mudbox” - I tried it out - it was quite intuitive
 But my demo period ran out

A few years ago I purchased software named “CrossOver” by the company “CodeWeavers” and it uses bottles and Wine both. I need to run a Windows circuit emulator and it worked very well once I got used to it. I no longer use it because I don’t need the emulator any more and that was the only Windows program I needed. Prior to that I had used Wine by itself a few times but found CrossOver easier to use.

Who cares as long as it does the job

Codeweavers supply wine as a free version but for more functions you need to buy crossover

I dont like renting anything. Gas bottles used to be rental only 
 a new player in the market lets you buy them. The cost difference for casual use like oxy/acetylene is huge.

Think we have the same ideas.

But if you want office, adobe etc for many its the only choice. Or use an older or illegal product. I prefer using an alternative product

Exception when on holiday I often rent a car but only because public transport is not available or practical

If I am so desperate to run Windows apps on Linux and buy Crossover, then I will build a Windows machine and forget about Linux!!
