I’m breaking in a new (to me) ultra sff box this weekend, so maybe I’ll give it a spin. But it sure doesn’t sound like an entry level distro!

Thanks! That sounds like a great weekend project :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
You’re right — Helwan Linux isn’t exactly an entry-level distro, but it’s surprisingly welcoming if you’re comfortable with Arch or enjoy learning by doing.
It’s designed for power users who want speed, control, and real flexibility without the bloat — but the custom tools and pre-configured environment do help flatten the learning curve a bit.

Would love to hear your thoughts if you give it a spin!

Thank you for your comment. Helwan Linux is a technical project built with passion and professionalism, regardless of geography. Egypt, and Cairo in particular, is home to many talented developers and open-source contributors. We believe that innovation knows no borders — and we’d rather be judged by the quality of our work, not where we come from."

From a personal view point I would prefer to not use this community site as a launch platform for any product or version. We would very quickly become swamped with “sales pitches” from all the leading distributions.

I think these types of messages are more suited to the weekly newsletter sent out.

Although I take on board the comments raised, I do not think the replys were in any way against a linux version from any other country, I believe the warning over downloading and using from any unknow source is justified.

I wish you the very best for your product, its development and implémentation

Thank you, Paul, for taking the time to clarify your view.

We understand the desire to keep community platforms free from excessive promotional content, and we agree that there should be a balance. However, we’d like to emphasize that this post was never intended as a “sales pitch,” but rather as a community update from an open-source project sharing progress and tools that may benefit others.

As for the earlier comment, it directly referenced ethnicity and location in a way that many would reasonably consider biased. While we fully support raising awareness about software from unfamiliar sources, we believe that such warnings should remain technical and not reference nationality or geography.

Helwan Linux remains fully open-source, transparent, and auditable — and we invite the community to inspect, test, and engage, as is the spirit of FOSS.

We appreciate your kind words at the end, and we look forward to continuing development with integrity and openness.

I endorse that. This forum is for discussion.

For me, the biggest disappointment is that it uses systemd and does not embace init freedom.
They should base it on Artix instead of Arch.

I’ve poked around on the website of this distribution. It appears to be a one-man show, which gives cause for concern.

I understand this is a young project, but version 1.0 appears quite out of the blue. This is also reason for concern.

AFAIK Debian in August 1993 wasn’t a big distro either.
Now it’s my only real daily driver
So let’s check this 32 years later, and judge then whether it is a success or just a one-man-show?

I tend to prefer Arabica over Robusta when it comes to coffe. So something from East-Africa alone doesn’t sound that alarming to me, just because it’s from there, it doesn’t have to be malicious
Anyway, AUR is just after a malware party, so the heads-up warning is justified.

There are some quite good distros that started as a one-man effort. They are usually innovative and independent. Lets see what time brings with Helwan.
The idea of a dedicated development environment appeals to me.
The idea of basing it on a systemd distro does not appeal to me.

Thank you to the It’s FOSS Community and all the incredible members here.

I’m genuinely grateful that my post has been restored. I’m especially thankful to those who supported me, either publicly or silently — your encouragement means a lot.

Helwan Linux is a labor of love. It may be a young project, and yes, I’m a solo developer, but it’s backed by passion, technical rigor, and a deep respect for the open-source ecosystem. I built this not to sell a dream, but to solve real problems for developers and tinkerers like myself.

I understand the skepticism — it’s healthy, and it keeps our ecosystem strong. But I also believe that every major distribution once started with one person and one vision. Constructive criticism is always welcome, but so is respectful curiosity.

To those who tried Helwan Linux or gave feedback: thank you. To those who questioned it: you’re part of the journey too.

And finally, thanks again to the moderators and staff for allowing my voice to be heard here. It’s communities like this that keep the spirit of Linux alive.

Warm regards,
Saeed, Creator of Helwan Linux

Interesting forum for Helwan Linux. I noticed you ask for contributors and mention developers and languages like C. Am curious, anything in particular you need developed in C? I really like the idea of a distribution crafted for developers and power users. Personally, I have a hard time finding Linux distributions I’m comfortable with because my software choices appear to be very different from the average user or developer. I find it interesting to hear about others’ experiences building a distribution that fits their needs. I keep wanting to do that some day. Wish you good luck with the new distribution. Getting the word out and developing a group of devoted users can be difficult.

Hi Laura,

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comment. It means a lot to see someone who understands the deep, personal journey of creating a Linux distribution that reflects not only technical needs but also a sense of identity and purpose.

We’re more than happy to invite you to take part in shaping Helwan Linux. From today, consider the distro your home and your newborn project. You’re welcome to contribute in any programming language you’re comfortable with—not just C—and you’re also invited to:

Create new applications tailored to your vision.

Improve or rewrite existing components.

Modify any current project within the distro if you see areas of improvement or opportunity.

As the spiritual mother of this project, every addition or improvement you make—whether it’s code, design, or documentation—will be clearly credited to you and recognized officially across our repositories and channels.

For now, communication is through email until you choose a method that’s more convenient for you.
