Just wanted to say hi since im new here and fairly new to linux. Im from Sweden and a bit old
. In Januari i got a new pc and at the end of januari i started to use linux since im sick of what microsoft is doing ,i have tried Ubuntu and mint and realy liked mint but after 3 weeks i got serious problems with the kernel and i tried Cachyos and also liked it very much but got some issues with some updates, now im using fedora kde plasma and like it so far. now i need some tips on a good stable distro for every day use and wich also is good for gaming and user friendly.
Hi @cat-man , and welcome
I dont know about gaming, but for stability and general use MX Linux is at least as good as Mint.
If you stay with a Debian-based distro there are generally more people around who can help
Regards
Neville
ok. thanks will try MX Linux since i got 2 nvme ssd disks
Hello and welcome look forward to reading things from you and sharing your Linux experience
Hi @cat-man :
välkommen till vårt forum. ![]()
Det här forumet är jättebra.
You couldn´t have come to a better place for help and advice.
There are so many friendly and knowledgeable people here who are willing to help.
Seems you are in a good spot here. I gather the specs of your PC would be well-suited for running any Linux distro on it.
We´re looking forward to hearing from you again.
All the best from Rosika ![]()
Welcome to the forum @cat-man.
I’m a bit old myself and started using Mint when I was 69.
That was seven years ago.
Tack så mycket
. Thank you very much yes i like this forum be looking around reading stuff for about 2 weeks . my spec is ryzen 7 9800 and geforce rtx5070ti and 32 gb ram and 2 nvme ssd disks on 1 tb each. and i play most of my games on steam

Välkommen! Jag är Finske men tyvärr min svensk är inte so bra. Nice PC you have! Remember to backup regularly and enjoy trying different distroes
Hi here and welcome!
Except of gaming, my needs are exactly like yours. Debian is my chosen distro, it fulfills all my needs. Probably you could take a chance on it.
You definitely will need the prop. driver for it.
Thanks for the warm welcome
Ok i might as well try gaming on fedora and i have nvidia driver 5.95 on fedora so it should be good.
about back up is there any tools in Fedora like Snapper or Time shift i could use
There are 3 sorts of backup
- snapshots like Timeshift … they protect you against software gliches and accidentally deleting data.
- personal data archives … you can always reinstall an OS but you must keep more than one copy of your personal data
- complete offline backups like Clonezilla …they protect you against disk failure
You can put the first type ( snapshots) on your internal disk, but the second and third types need to be on some external medium … eg a usb disk or a cloud storage service.
ok . Thanks i will look in to it
Welcome! I’m even older than Howard. Look into partitioning one of your drives for experimenting. My 1T SSD has five partitions, with five distros at the moment. There’s plenty of help and good humor here.
Thank you Bill.Wow you have 5 distros in one pc not bad ,darn lol now i want to test more distros
.
Hi @cat-man
I’m the odd man in the group, I use W11 and VirtualBox to explore and play with Linux!! I do have Slackware15 and LinuxFromScratch running on an old Dell Inspirion 530, that also boots Windows XP!! The only other Linux, I will waste my time on is Gentoo!! Do hope you enjoy your Linux adventure!!
Hi @cat-man,
Welcome to the forum.
I’ve never tried Steam on Linux, though I do have an account from when I used to play games many years ago, but was on Windows. However, I have a friend who I believe uses Fedora to play Steam games.
Let me know what you need to know, and I’ll check with him to see if he uses Fedora and how he installed Steam, so I can help you with whatever you need.
As a last resort, I could also install Fedora and try to install Steam to help you.
Jorge
Or play on linux or wine …
But I am not a games user
Thanks Daniel and Jorge
