I’m running firefox in termux with tor proxy, i want to read an it’s foss article, it crashes termux twice. Lesson learned then, only open it’s foss and other ad heavy sites on native browser ![]()
I’ve been using It’s FOSS for 7+ years and NEVER had an issue with performance…
probably 90% on a Linux browser (probably Google Chrome or Brave) and maybe 10% on a MacOS browser (also Brave)…
@abhishek does a kickarse job of keeping this site running…
I don’t use my smartphone for this site… But I have used Firefox to access it from a single core NTC CHIP ARM SBC computer with a massive 512 mb of RAM and didn’t see any performance issues…
Hi @TiffanyLynch ,
I dont think the itsFOSS forum is ad-heavy. Ads are quite rare there.
I dont use the main itsFOSS site often, but it gives me no trouble on either firefox in a PC , or ddg on an Android tablet.
That combination of termux + firefox + tor has a lot of possibilities for gliches.
Anyway, welcome to the forum, and good on you for being brave and posting it.
Regards
Neville
Hi Tiffany, ![]()
welcome to the forum from me as well.
I think the ITSFoss website isn´t heavy at all.
To verify it I measured it with my waterfox web-browser. You should be able to do it in firefox as well.
In the hamburger menu go to “More tools” —> “Task manager”. Here you can see the stats of the open tabs.
I tried it with this page from itsfoss: Raspberry Pi 500+: A Computer Inside a Mechanical Keyboard .
The results were:
- 68 MB of memory
- 0.067% CPU
In contrast to that, a really heavy site is Duolingo .
I use this site almost daily for practising some Hungarian grammar. Its stats are as follows:
- 199 MB of memory
- 42% CPU (mostly, but it varies to quite some extent from 5% upwards)
Many greetings from Rosika ![]()
I quite often connect via my android phone or my 20 year old linux mint computer with 2gb memory which is 32 Bit and never have issues on speed or size
Think you may have a problem at your end
What are you using to connect,?
Thanks for noticing it. Not sure why it happens. Ads could be blamed for this since the ad scripts auto-refresh at periodic intervals. Perhaps it is not well handled in this scenario.
Maybe install uBlock Origin extension, I notice several performance boosts while using it.
That is interesting… you are saying some sites have so many ads it slows up the browser display.
The ads would be blocked at your end, I think. so it may not improve the transmission.?
I don’t know, but I use it with Quad9 DNS, so they might be blocking some from their end…
@George1 :
Hi George, ![]()
thanks for mentioning it.
In my post #4 I posted the results from task manager in my waterfox browser.
They seem to indicate that the itsfoss site is by now means to be seen as “heavy”.
What I forgot to mention is the fact that I indeed use the UBlock Origin add-on.
25 elements were blocked by it on the example site I used.
I just wanted to add this information for the sake of completeness.
Cheers from Rosika ![]()
