You can put an ad blocker in the browser
not sure it will work with discourse
Why bother, just scroll it up.
uBlock Origin blocks that for me.
@pdecker
Thanks, my uBlock Origin adblocker was not working with Edge, a reinstall fixed the problem!!!
Solution!!!
Because it was bugging me!!!
Did you get an adblocker to work?
I could do with that for some news sites… there are so many ads you cant find the text.
But the advert is how the site continues to work, selling space, i dont find it a problem just ignore it
Me too, but is there any difference between ignoring it mentally or electronically?
itsFOSS ads are minimal… some news sites are so overpopulated with ads that I find them unviewable.
If we choose to put a stop on adverts on sites like foss the lack of income generation could be significant and prevent it continuing, i suspect he only gets money if someone clicks through ? And the amount could be peanuts.
I read the daily papers on line and there is so much advertisement you get used to ignoring.
Will be interesting with windows 11 and the talk in Microsoft of pushed adverts, plus switching off of none microsoft products
How about we all click once , then ignore it
That ‘ad’ is basically an image that can be clicked to to get the offer on Linux ebooks.
This is only on the Community here. I manually put it there for a few reasons:
- It does not track you or your activity (unless you click and go on that website)
- The image is shown after the entire discussion is over. So not distracting from the actual topic.
- I’ll make any money only if you click on the link and make a purchase. Quite honestly, it has made only $2.5 in the last month. So not something that makes me richer or even covers the infrastructure cost of this forum
- A few of the members may actually be interested in such an offer. That’s why it is manually added by me. I often get to know about such deals and offers. Not everyone would need it but a few may take interest.
As far as I remember, the ads are not shown for members with higher trust levels and the Plus members. That’s one way to not see it if you cannot ignore it
Thanks for sharing the info on how it works and the sums involved, you are never going to make the rich list with this, but i agree for some members the attraction ov discounted products related to the site can be attractive. Must be very difficult to select something suitable for all without being obtrusive.
Got to admit i still have it on my screen but have never followed the link, and its very rare I do on any site unless be accident.
Probably we all do the same. We are now used to of ignoring the ads on websites.
Many other sites have so many popups that if you stop you cannot get in to them or if you dont accept the cookies.
Hi @abhishek ,
I think the single ad is OK.
I clicked and had a look at their site.
They have a range of interesting books.
I think the design of the ad is poor… if it said
“click here to visit our linux bookshop”
some people might actually look at it.
Or am I being old and dumb?
Regards
Neville
@abhishek
I understand the need to advertise, but on my part, I thought it was more than an ad, being placed their by someone, other than it’s Foss. Would love to be a Pro member, but just cannot justify the expense, with my limited retired budget. On my part the issue has been fixed!!!
I understand that @Daniel_Phillips
That’s why I don’t force the Plus membership on anyone
Also, Happy Cake Day
The cookie stuff is actually a legal requirement. It is annoying but websites have to put them.
Although i agree with the notice I personnal want an option to not accept cookies and still have access.
None of my current sites have or use cookies in any way, and apart from one of about 20 years back I have never included that as an option.
Same too with data collection, there is none. I have an option to contact me, but that just sends an email form and once sent does not stock anything. On one site its possible to join the association but once complete it is emailed to the people who need to know, president and membership secretary then not stored in any form.
Makes life simple for me as web master and data protection.
