Installing chrome on your linux machine

I dropped on to this article

Using edge to install chrome on a windows machine, it made me think. For some time google chrome was not available in the linux mint repository, so i had to use firefox to get chrome. But usually I would install chromium using the software source repositories. For most users they just want google and chromium looks like chrome, except the icon is blue not multi coloured.

So do you do the same, use software centre or firefox (default) to get your preferd browser ?

I use Firefox as my default, at least until DuckDuckGo’s browser is ported to Linux. I configure Firefox to not remember history and use Proton Pass as a password manager to make Firefox as secure as possible.

Same with me. Firefox is adequate.
If I want secure my options are

  • use Waterfox
  • use Firefox in firejail

I cant even imagine how one would use a browser to install software?
Do you mean you used the browser to download it?

I myself use Chromium since a while, before that I had Firefox as my browser.
For Chrome I have set up the repo, so install it via apt install.
On all our computers we have installed browsers we use: FF, Chromium, Chrome.
I don’t use Chome, but like to have it installed “just in case”.

Mine is firefox as a last minute in case of problems with the others.

Chrome first then chromium, I didcovered last week on chromium your user profile is totally different to chrome and so having 2 email accounts is not practical or the same as chrome.

I was actually using Edge on Linux until quite recently…

it was handy - I used my employer account to sync Edge across multiple devices…

Then my employed banned access via deviced they hadn’t issued - so - I stopped using Edge… A retrograde move on my employers part - and it has decreased my productivity - once upon a time I’d check my corporate email or Teams from anywhere… But now I can only do it with the boat anchor that work issued me - so - it’s a MacBook - but I NEVER take it away from my desk - so stuff I might have responded to when it was convenient - is no longer convenient and has to wait till I’m slaving in front of the piece of crap…

So - I don’t use Edge anymore on Linux or Mac (except on my work MacBook) - but I do use BOTH Google Chrome and Brave on Linux (and I used Chromium on my RPi5 with a “hack” that Pi-Apps let me install on Ubuntu 24.04 arm64 so that Chromium syncs just like Google Chrome)…

I hate normal Chrome, simply because Google are in the process of taking away Adblockers, so as default Brave Browser and Firefox for online banking. Brave Browser has all the blockers baked into it and is a must to get rid of annoying adverts, plus making YouTube act and feel before Google made it a mess. It’s also good for getting rid of adverts on Channel 5 and ITVX. Channel 4 has upped their security and it cannot block their Ads. These TV channels online repeat the same advert over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Thought on your mac you would go with safari ?
Unless its an out of date support mac where safari will no longer update.

Thought the google idea was to build in adblock so no longer a need for a third party ?

Google is becoming as intrusive as Microsoft. I choose to avoid all Google products as much as possible.

But google products are free ?
Well almost, paid for by ads … and in most cases no real alternatives ensemble just bits.

No - I use Edge on MacOS because it integrates well with O365 - and syncs using my work email address… I used to use Edge on my other computers (Mac and Linux) but work now blocks access from non-sanctioned devices… Also - creating automatic replies in Outlook is vastly easier in the browser client, than the big fat Outlook client for MacOS.

I barely ever use Safari… But I did leave Safari as the default browser on my work MacBook - 'cause there’s a few things I need that for - like when I’m at work - the prompts for the WiFi at the office won’t work on Brave (and the certificate acceptance prompt - which I even have to do to use ethernet at the office) - so I use Safari for that…

I got a bit fed up of how Brave kinda had me by the short-n-curlies - and decided to try using Google Chrome again (about 2-3 years ago) - but boy ads in Youtube are annoying! Quickly switched back to Brave (I had a few issues with the “ethics” of the guy who started Brave - but he’s not gettting any revenue me from me - so refusing to use his product has no impact - he was formerly a Mozilla allumni)…

Brave also blocks ads on SBS-OnDemand - an Australian TV Network… When there’s an ad-break - the content flickers black momentarily (like 1-2 seconds) then the contempt keeps running…

No - it’s a MBP 2020 M1 - so well in support for years to come… If I ever leave I might ask if I can keep it - 'cause it’s slightly better than my personal MBP 2020 M1 (more RAM and storage) and the touchbar isn’t cactus on it.

Brave now have arm64 build for Linux - and I’m running it on my RPi5 with Ubuntu 24.04… And as mentioned above - I Google-ified Chromium via the “Pi-Apps” (only so I can sync my settings with Google Chrome - bookmarks et cetera).

I actually used to use Chromium until google changed the API and blocked sync’ing from non Google browsers… Hmmm - actually - no - I stopped using Chromium on Ubuntu around 18.04 or so - when Ubuntu made it a snap - and it would take minutes to start (vs instantly when installed via apt).

Up til around 3 years ago - I was running Pi-Hole on a Pi3 then a Pi4 to block ads - but - it broke some stuff from running at all - and - I no longer needed it 'cause I was using Brave…

I am locked into chrome as we use google drive, docs, sheets for our association. Even had to set everyone with google accounts so we could all do the same thing. One interface makes it easier for me to support everyone.

For me safari is ok but i forget some settings connecting mail, safari and system where the command setting is held, mainly as i dont do it often.
