Installing NVIDIA driver for GT730 in Fedora has made it unusable!

OK, assuming the current hardware was nore or less sufficient perfirmance wise…
I’d keep the tower and PSU.
I’d get a Mobo with dvi or hdmi or dsub output, with lga1152 v2 socket. I’d get an 8th gen i5 or i3 which has igpu, so you don’t need to spend on graphics card.
And of course sufficient DDR4 RAM, at least 8GB, but 16 maybe better.
Of course all this second hand, I’d sell the current unneeded hw, thus redzcing cost of upgrade.
I recomnend at least 8th gen, because in that gen. there was a bigger step in performance, and even bigger in performance/watt than between previous gens. So you’ll get more for the buck…
Don’t be afraid if intel iGPU, it is quite good performant and very well suppirted in Linux.
Of course your budget will determine what you can look for, eithet better or weaker “new” hardware.

Awesome specs!!! All I will say is I wish I had that board, it would be running W11, if it were mine!!! Linux has no need for that board!!!

It depends what you do with Linux. A big compute task, like video editing or games, will flatten any PC whether it is Linux or Win.

I will second what Laszlo says.
If budget is an issue , you may be able to find something like those specs in a refurbished PC.

That is no surprise!!! But if W10 were put back on that PC, then it would stand a better chance with running Linux!!!

You mean run Linux in Vbox under W10 ?
Yes, that would let the graphics card work

Not exactly!!! It is obvious, and I have dealt with the same issue, that board is in need of some drivers, and a W10 install would, at least, tell if the board is working, if that then works, it would and should boot most any Linux, and or even do away with Windows. I would imagine the USB ports and the graphics card would come back alive, with Windows.

I get it, use W10 as a test. Good idea.

Something like that but get an ISO, like W10 Home and burn and boot from a DVD drive, do not use USB boot until the board either boots or fails.

Awesome specs @Skywalker71 !
I think u ahould follow the advice given by @kovacslt and @Daniel_Phillips

I have used AMD for myself from the K6-2 variant. I also build PCs for others with AMD processors when they left the choice on me and those machines performed very well. As I was and am a photography person by heart, I always found AMD Radeon GPUs are much superior than Intel iGPUs and as Radeons always perform better when paired with AMD processors, I always use these both. In fact my previous graphics card which is lying idle nowadays, was an ATI Radeon 5450 1GB DDR5. But unfortunately I could not buy a dedicated Radeon card when I built this PC as I needed more than 1GB VRAM. Now I am thinking of getting a Ryzen 5 processor Gen 4 or 5 (if you guys recommend me something it will be very helpful) as it will be a bit less expensive, I think and a B450 mobo with wifi and 16GB DDR4. The recent Vega graphics would be sufficient for photo, video and sound editing. What do you say?

What do you mean??!! :fearful:

I don’t want to give Microsoft any more money, that’s why I am not going for W11 though many people here are using pirated copies successfully but they are a bit risky. For this reason I want to use Linux. But I need alternative softwares for what I do in Windows.

I mean that the OS makes very little difference to compute times for big numerical compute jobs. What matters is a good CPU and lots of fast RAM. Even disk speed does not matter much, unless it swaps.

What is that?

You can opt for a ryzen too . But if energy efficiency matters, it’s nowhere near to intel.
I had a ryzen 5 1600, which I changed to i5 8500. They were similar aged, and the i5 with 6 cores performed somewhat better than the ryzen with 12 threads.
Now I have an i7 8700 which serves all my needs.
For me computing performance, power drawing and price to buy all matters. I found 8th gen the sweet spot in that triangle.
But our expectations, wishes and needs may differ, so treat my advice according to this

I am using W10 right now as my GT730 is not supporting Linux and vice versa. But if it would be supported, still I would have to use W10 till I find alternatives of the softwares I use in Windows and this is the reason I am still using Windows as my primary OS.

For what tasks would you like to find alternatives?

Then there is nothing wrong with your hardware.
The issues with usb drives booting and graphics card in linux are software issues.

Photo editing with Photoshop, video editing with Premiere Pro mainly, sound editing with Adobe Audition mainly, graphics editing with Adobe Illustrator and XAMP or WAMP. Unfortunately I couldn’t found any software which can replace these in Linux. You can say GIMP or DARKTABLE to use but these are good for a hobbyist and not for professional use where you have to process 200+ photos within a very very short period of time. These are not usable at all, no offence. Only cross platform PRO video editing software is Davinci Resolve but installing it in Linux is next to impossible. For sound editing, there are some softwares but they are not full fledged DAW. Regarding XAMP / WAMP, though I had installed XAMP but I could not find a way to upgrade its MariaDB version. I don’t know how I would be able to use Linux for my work and would replace Windows. :disappointed: But I really want to replace Windows and all those products I use which are only Windows based. And now another problem has surfaced, this ‘Disk Descriptor Error’ problem. I am thinking, if there is a problem in the mobo (which might have), then why Fedora is not giving any error??!!

WOW!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I was really heartbroken thinking that my motherboard might have a problem. This motherboard is so sturdy and feature rich that nowadays it is too hard to find such a board and if I could, it may not be affordable for general person like me.

Then pop-in a updated graphics card, get it running with W10 and try to boot Linux with a DVD!!!
